Well-Deserved Public Praise for Bonnie Faulkner’s ‘Guns and Butter’, on KPFA Community Radio Berkeley

Guns and Butter‘ affirms that if you’re not paranoid . . .

By P. Joseph Potocki
The Bohemian

Back in 2002, on the very first anniversary of the 9-11 attacks, KPFA 94.1-FM radio in Berkeley launched Guns and Butter , a locally produced, regionally broadcast weekly show that is possibly progressive radio’s most subversive. The program features muckraking intelligentsia from the fringe looking in and those from the geopolitical eye of the storm looking out. It’s The X-Files for real–minus any little green men.

Guns and Butter ‘s impeccably produced interviews showcase hard-nosed investigators digging deep, revealing unsanctioned truths about the power elite, along with legal experts making the case for corporate criminal prosecutions and administration impeachments. Shows have highlighted urban squatters, human rights advocates and crusading sinners turned saints, to name but a few.

The phrase ” Guns and Butter ,” says host Bonnie Faulkner, often pops up in the business section of newspapers. “Lyndon Johnson was running a ‘ Guns and Butter ‘ war in Vietnam. He was both conducting a military war, but also a war on poverty.”

Guns and Butter the show gives voice to whistleblowers, disenchanted military insiders and former high-level spooks, and to radical economists, pit-bull researchers and geopolitical wunderkinds. The program is all about money, powerful establishment baddies, plots, schemes and Cassandras. Subject matter ranges from the dangers threatening our democracy to connections between capitalism and environmental destruction; from revelations of unprecedented graft, greed, banal cabals and gruesome conspiracies to buried… Continue reading

Janice Matthews is the Executive Director of 911Truth.org . Janice was their outreach coordinator until September, 2005 when she became executive director. She is also co-founder of the now-archived 9/11 Visibility Project , and focuses on facilitating activism and encouraging ordinary people to become participants and leaders in their own lives and communities. She has a B.A. from the University of Kansas, half a masters in social welfare and extensive training in direct-entry midwifery. She is a mother of six, a Kansas City native and radical Christian, and is working now to create a more self-sufficient/interdependent lifestyle. Janice is outraged about issues facing military troops and veterans– abuse/rape, ‘depleted’ uranium, ‘immunizations,’ lack of care and support received–resulting in suicides and hundreds of thousands of homeless veterans, the horrifying ‘non-lethal’ weaponry used by the US, and our current mainstream media (please, “become the media”!)and believes decentralized people’s movements are our hope for successful, nonviolent change in America, as has so often been the case around the world.

MAYDAY….MAYDAY….MAYDAY!!! Firefighters for 911 Truth Forms

ff911truthlogo
Welcome to Firefighters for 9/11 Truth. My name is Erik Lawyer, and I am the
founding member. I am currently a full time firefighter, and have been assigned
to 3 Truck in the City of Seattle for the last 12 years. Before that I was with
the City of Sacramento as a Firefighter Paramedic. I first began working in
Emergency Services in 1988 in the Sacramento area with a 911 private paramedic
ambulance company. I have 20 years experience in Emergency Services. I earned
my pilot’s license in 1987, and have been recreationally flying since. I graduated
with a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics from the University of California
at Davis in 1993, with 2 years of elective Engineering courses, and a Minor
in Psychology.

I would like to share my story concerning September 11, 2001 and the events
that led to the creation of Firefighters for 9/11 Truth. I, like most Americans,
remember exactly where I was when I saw the attacks and had the overwhelming
urge to take action. I was shocked, outraged, scared and confused. I called
my Battalion Chief and asked if Seattle would be sending any teams to help.
I was a member of the MMST, and figured we would be needed and I wanted to know
where to report. Due to the nature of the incident we were not called up, and
instead USAR teams, including Seattle’s, were sent.

I first visited Ground Zero in October of 2001 with several firefighters from
Seattle.…

Iraq War resister Robin Long jailed, facing three years in Army stockade

By Courage to Resist
August 7, 2008

Photo of Robin Long with peace sign

Robin Long

Last month 25-year-old U.S. Army PFC Robin Long became the first war resister since the Vietnam War to be forcefully deported from Canadian soil and handed over to military authorities. Robin is currently being held in the El Paso County Jail, near Colorado Springs, Colorado, awaiting a military court martial for resisting the unjust and illegal war against and occupation of Iraq. Robin will be court martialed for desertion “with intent to remain away permanently” — Article 85 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice — in early September. The maximum allowable penalty for a guilty verdict on this charge is three years confinement, forfeiture of pay, and a dishonorable discharge from the Army.

In order to expedite Robin’s trial, it appears that his unit command, the Fourth Brigade Combat Team, Fourth Infantry Division is opting to not charge Robin with speech-related violations of military discipline; opting to try and convict Robin as fast as possible.

Robin went absent without leave (AWOL) from the Army in 2005, realizing that he had significant moral opposition to the war and the lies he had been told regarding the reason for invasion and occupation of Iraq. After being transferred to an Iraq bound combat unit, Robin went to Boise, Id. (his home town) where he stayed for several months, before traveling to Canada.

Robin recently talked to Courage to Resist about why he enlisted. “When the U.S. first attacked Iraq, I was told by my president that it was because of direct ties to Al-Qaida and weapons of mass destruction.” Robin explained that while he was uneasy about his personal role in fighting, the Iraq War seemed justified.…

Sibel Edmonds vs. the Nuclear Terrorists

Intro, continued: Scott Horton, of AntiwarRadio.com, interviewed Sibel Edmonds and the blogger who’s long covered her important case (which the corporate media still refuses to touch), Luke Ryland, to shine some light on what might be happening here. Again, Congress refuses to hold hearings, and hold anyone to account. This interview reviews some of the information that’s come to light in Sibel’s 6-year case, as well as the utter lack of action by Congress with regard to the entire network of whistleblowers with whom she’s associated.

Sibel on Congress: “What happened to all those promises you made? All the promises they made, none of them were fulfilled! They may look like champions, but all we have gotten with people like Chairman Waxman and Chairman Conyers is all barking … as soon as the issue dies down in the media, they just go away. They don’t do anything. They haven’t brought about any type of accountability, any type of meaningful hearings … nothing that in any way would bring with it type of accountability or further action, and they do have the power. … (Before, the blamed the Republicans) now we see that with the Democrats across the House, like Pelosi. … If the mainstream media were to do their job that would create the necessary pressure on Congress so that Congress would do what it’s supposed to do; it’s not doing favors, it’s basically fulfilling their obligation to the American public. This is why we are in this sorry… Continue reading

Senator Mike Gravel Speaks about NYC 9/11 Initiative on Democracy Now

Democray Now

Watch the video here; written transcript follows:

AMY GOODMAN: Former Alaska senator and 2008 presidential candidate Mike Gravel is holding a news conference in New York City today to call for a new independent investigation into 9/11. Gravel will be speaking on behalf of the NYC 9/11 Ballot Initiative Campaign, a grassroots group seeking to place an initiative on the ballot of the November 6th general election allowing registered New York City voters to create a new commission to investigate 9/11.

The group is looking to appoint between nine and fifteen commissioners on the panel to conduct the investigation. Some of the people who have reportedly already agreed to serve as commissioners include Lori Van Auken, a 9/11 widow, one of the so-called “Jersey Girls”; Lincoln Chafee, the former Republican senator from Rhode Island; Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, a pastor in Detroit, Michigan; as well as former Democratic Senator Mike Gravel, who joins us here today.

He has published three books this year: Citizen Power: A Mandate for Change, The Kingmakers: How the Media Threatens Our Security and Our Democracy and A Political Odyssey. His book Citizen Power: A Mandate for Change has a forward by Ralph Nader. He’ll be joining us on the show later in the week.

Welcome to Democracy Now!, Senator Gravel.

MIKE GRAVEL: Amy, thank you for having me. But before we launch into the mission of my appearance, I want to comment on this young man you just had on. I’ve got… Continue reading

Senator Mike Gravel Calls for New Investigation of 9/11, Supports NYC 9/11 Ballot Initiative

(New York, NY, June 13, 2008) — On Tuesday, June 17th at 5pm, at Union Square in New York City, former Senator Mike Gravel, speaking on behalf of the NYC 9/11 Ballot Initiative Campaign, will call for a new and far reaching investigation of the crimes of 9/11. This comes in the wake of several developments which underscore the need for a truly independent, thorough, fact-driven investigation into the events of 9/11. Consider the recent book by NY Times veteran reporter Philip Shenon titled ?The Commission: The Uncensored History of the 9/11 Investigation? which highlighted the conflicts of interest of Executive Director Philip Zelikow. Consider the book by Tom Kean and Lee Hamilton titled ?Unprecedented? in which they stated they were “doomed to fail from the start” and they were lied to by NORAD regarding our absence of air defense. Consider the Articles of Impeachment nos. 33-35 by Dennis Kucinich which list hard evidence showing dereliction of duty, obstruction of justice, and malfeasance by the Bush administration. Consider the revelation of the destruction in 2004 of CIA tape recordings of suspects in Guantánamo Bay which were requested by the 9/11 Commission. Consider that Arizona Congresswoman Karen Johnson, who has called attention to the research of physics professor Steven… Continue reading

9/11, Deep State Violence, and the Hope of Internet Politics

Peter Dale Scott

The Deep State and 9/11

The unthinkable — that elements inside the state would conspire with criminals to kill innocent civilians — has become not only thinkable but commonplace in the last century. A seminal example was in French Algeria, where dissident elements of the French armed forces, resisting General de Gaulle’s plans for Algerian independence, organized as the Secret Army Organization and bombed civilians indiscriminately, with targets including hospitals and schools. 1 Critics like Alexander Litvinenko, who was subsequently murdered in London in November 2006, have charged that the 1999 bombings of apartment buildings around Moscow, attributed to Chechen separatists, were in fact the work of the Russian secret service (FSB). 2

Similar attacks in Turkey have given rise to the notion there of an extra-legal “deep state” — a combination of forces, ranging from former members of the CIA-organized Gladio organization, to “a vast matrix of security and intelligence officials, ultranationalist members of the Turkish underworld and renegade former members of the [Kurdish separatist] PKK.” 3 The deep state, financed in part by Turkey’s substantial heroin traffic, has been accused of killing thousands of civilians, in incidents such as the lethal bomb attack in November 2005 on a bookshop in Semdinli. This attack, initially attributed to the Kurdish separatist PKK, turned out to have been committed by members of Turkey’s paramilitary police intelligence service, together with a former PKK member turned informer. 4 On April 23, 2008, the former Interior Minister Mehmet Agar was ordered… Continue reading

Dr. William Pepper on James Earl Ray’s Innocence, Sirhan Sirhan’s Innocence, 9/11 Truth and Prosecuting War Crimes

Another excellent VIDEO EXCLUSIVE from Hot Potato Mash:

Dr. William Pepper on James Earl Ray’s Innocence, Sirhan Sirhan’s Innocence, 9/11 Truth and Prosecuting War Crimes

Dr. William F. Pepper is an internationally acclaimed lawyer who defended James Earl Ray in a 1999 civil trial (supported by Martin Luther King’s family) where the jury found Ray not responsible for the MLK assassination. Now Pepper is defending Sirhan Sirhan for the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, a case he says is ‘an easier one than the assassination of Martin King and the innocence of James Earl Ray’.

Last Wednesday Pepper spoke about all of his projects, including 9/11 truth and prosecuting the Bush administration for war crimes, to a packed celebrity filled house in Los Angeles. Among those in attendance were Ed Asner, Gina Belafonte, Judd Nelson and 9/11 author Professor David Ray Griffin. Videos of his talk follow …

Part 1 (6:21) – Introduction

In Part 1 Pepper talks about his background, childhood and motivation. He also speaks about the time he spent in Cuba playing baseball where he got to know Fidel Castro. According to Pepper, Castro foresaw much of what is happening in the United States today:

‘When, in that massive country to the north, the masses of the people ever understand what it is that their ruling class has done to them and is doing to them, there will be such a torrent of opposition. They will rise like never before and then there will be the… Continue reading

The Truth is Out There (published in the ‘Financial Times’)

By Peter Barber
June 7 2008
Financial Times

When Cynthia McKinney speaks the words of Martin Luther King Jr, they resound through the church with some of King’s cadence. “A time comes,” declares the former US congresswoman from Georgia, “when silence is betrayal.” The congregation answers with whoops and calls of “That’s right!” King was talking about America’s war in Vietnam. More than 40 years later, before the packed pews of the Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, McKinney is speaking of the American government’s war on its own people. The shock and awe phase of this conflict, we had been told earlier, began on September 11 2001, when the Bush administration launched attacks on New York and Washington, or at least waved them through.

According to a show of hands that February afternoon, several hundred people in the immaculate church believe this to be true. Some came in T-shirts bearing the words “9/11 was an inside job”. One wore a badge demanding that you “Examine your assumptions”. Quite a few bought the DVDs on sale in the foyer, most of which bore photographs of the Twin Towers spewing smoke. They had all come to hear the message of Architects, Engineers & Scientists for 9/11 Truth, one of the dozens of groups across the US which campaign to persuade us that everything we think we know about 9/11 is wrong.

Marion Cotillard, actress–“There was a tower in Spain which burnt for 24 hours. It never collapsed”

John Pilger Confirms Multiple RFK Shooters on Democracy Now! 6.5.2008

by Reprehensor, posted at 911blogger.com, June 5, 2008

Amy Goodman made note of the 40th anniversary of the assassination of RFK today
with a tribute that included a useful history of the life and times of RFK,
but Goodman also parroted the establishment line that Sirhan Sirhan killed RFK.
Following this statement, Goodman played a segment of an interview with Sirhan’s
brother, Munir. During the segment, Munir notes that Sirhan has no memory of
what happened that night at the Ambassador Hotel, and never has been able to
remember what happened that night. Goodman then talked to John Pilger on the
telephone, and Pilger made the stunning admission that not only was he there
that night 40 years ago, he heard multiple shots, says that the shots kept coming
even after Sirhan had been wrestled to the ground, and he told this to the FBI.
Something tells me that Pilger would strongly agree with the recently released
acoustic evidence;

JOHN PILGER: … Sirhan leapt up on a serving area, pointed a gun at him and
fired. He was wrestled. Kennedy fell. He was wrestled to the ground, and then
there were other shots.

There’s no question that there was another gunman, because one of the
people who was hit, just grazed, was standing next to me, and that happened
when Sirhan Sirhan had been wrestled to the ground. So that’s the interesting
thing. There was another assassin or another several assassins. And then it
was bedlam. And as you know,… Continue reading

(The Late) M.L. King Still Silenced

April 4, 2008
by Jeff Cohen
Consortiumnews.com

Soon after Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday became a federal holiday in 1986, I began prodding mainstream media to cover the dramatic story of King’s last year as he campaigned militantly against U.S. foreign and economic policy.

Most of his last speeches were recorded. But year after year, corporate networks have refused to air the tapes.

San Diego Air & Space Museum Archives /Flickr Creative Commons

Last night, NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams enthused over new color footage of King that adorned its coverage of the 40th anniversary of the assassination. The report focused on the last phase of King’s life. But the same old blinders were in place.

NBC showed young working-class whites in Chicago taunting King. But there was no mention of how elite media had taunted King in his last year. In 1967 and ‘68, mainstream media saw Rev. King a bit like they now see Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Back then they denounced King’s critical comments; today they simply silence them.

While noting in passing that King spoke out against the Vietnam War, mainstream reports today rarely acknowledge that he went way beyond Vietnam to decry U.S. militarism in general.

“I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos,” said King in 1967 speeches on foreign policy, “without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today – my own government.”

In response to these speeches, Newsweek… Continue reading

David Ray Griffin on the 9/11 Truth Movement and Bush-Cheney’s “stupid” imperialism

By Matthew Singer
03/27/2008

When David Ray Griffin conceived his first book regarding the events of Sept. 11, 2001, his interpretation of what transpired that day revolved around the concept of blowback, that the attacks were a byproduct of America’s decades of aggressive foreign policy toward the Middle East. In short, at the time, he bought the official story of 9/11. He wasn’t letting the United States government off the hook for their role in the attacks, but he wasn’t placing culpability where he would eventually place it: squarely on the shoulders of the Bush administration.

While researching for that first book, Griffin came across a growing community — concentrated mostly online — of people questioning the circumstances of Sept. 11 as reported by the mainstream media. Now, the retired professor, theologian and longtime Santa Barbara resident is one the leading voices of the so-called 9/11 Truth Movement, citizens who believe the horror of that day was not caused by radical Islamic terrorists but was orchestrated within the walls of the White House. Derided in the press as loony conspiracy theorists (if given any attention at all), the group, Griffin says, now includes intellectuals such as himself, as well as architects, engineers, pilots, former military officers and even ex-CIA operatives.

“The change in the movement has been rather drastic, because a few years back, people would dismiss us as a bunch of crazies on the Internet. And then… Continue reading

AlterNet Editorial: Iraq Vets Will Detail U.S. Atrocities in Winter Soldier Hearings

By Editorial Staff, AlterNet
March 11, 2008

This week, on March 13-16, a new generation of “Winter Soldiers” — veterans of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq — will descend on the nation’s capitol to tell America in their own words what they saw during their service in the “war on terror,” the Bush administration’s signature policy. They’ll give a ground’s eye perspective on the occupation’s toll on the people of those countries and the costs to the military, and they’ll tell stories of what it was really like in places like Fallujah and Ramadi — places that are just names on a map to most of the people back home.

They’ll be following large footsteps. In the early months of 1971, a group of Vietnam vets, organized by Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW), gave two days of testimony about the Vietnam that they had seen, up close and all-too-personally, in the original “Winter Soldier” investigation. While largely dismissed by the political establishment, their wrenching testimony redoubled the peace movement’s efforts to end that war.

In his opening statement 37 years ago, William Crandell, a 26 year-old lieutenant who served in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division — the division that committed the infamous My Lai Massacre — told the hushed room, “The Winter Soldier Investigation is not a mock trial. There will be no phony indictments; there will be no verdict against Uncle Sam.” He promised “straightforward testimony — direct testimony — about acts which are war… Continue reading

Judge is asked to rescind shutdown of website

Media and public interest organizations tell the jurist that his order violates constitutional provisions against prior restraint of free speech.

By Henry Weinstein, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
February 27, 2008

A coalition of media and public interest organizations went to federal court in San Francisco on Tuesday urging a judge to reconsider his order to shut down a muckraking website that publishes leaked documents from businesses and government agencies worldwide.

Lawyers for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the American Civil Liberties Union, Public Citizen and several news organizations, told U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White that two orders he issued last week against wikileaks.org were prior restraints that violated the 1st Amendment.

Laura Handman, a Washington, D.C., attorney for the news organizations, said White’s order was so expansive that the only way to describe it was as if a judge had shut down a newspaper because of controversy over one article.

“I can’t think of another injunction that was so broad,” said Matt Zimmerman of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a civil rights group that focuses on digital issues.

White acted in response to a lawsuit filed Feb. 6 by Julius Baer & Co., a Zurich-based bank, alleging that a disgruntled former employee had posted internal documents alleging money-laundering and tax evasion schemes at its Cayman Islands branch.

Wikileaks.org specifically urges readers to post leaked documents in an effort to discourage “unethical behavior” by corporations and government agencies. Among the 1.2 million documents that Wikileaks says it has posted over the last… Continue reading

DANIEL ELLSBERG: Covering Up the Coverage – The American Media’s Complicit Failure to Investigate and Report on the Sibel Edmonds Case

In an Exclusive BRAD BLOG Op-Ed, the Legendary ‘Pentagon Papers’ Whistleblower Calls on the Media to Perform Their First Amendment Obligations, on Congressional Leaders to Perform Their Oversight Duty, and for Insider Sources to Come Forward to the American Public…

— Guest BRAD BLOG Op-Ed by Daniel Ellsberg

For the second time in two weeks, the entire U.S. press has let itself be scooped by Rupert Murdoch’s London Sunday Times on a dynamite story of criminal activities by corrupt U.S. officials promoting nuclear proliferation. But there is a worse journalistic sin than being scooped, and that is participating in a cover-up of information that demands urgent attention from the public, the U.S. Congress and the courts.

For the last two weeks — one could say, for years — the major American media have been guilty of ignoring entirely the allegations of the courageous and highly credible source Sibel Edmonds, quoted in the London Times on January 6, 2008 in a front-page story that was front-page news in much of the rest of the world but was not reported in a single American newspaper or network. It is up to readers to demand that this culpable silent treatment end.

Just as important, there must be pressure by the public on Congressional committee chairpersons, in particular Representative Henry Waxman and Senator Patrick Leahy. Both have been sitting for years on classified,… Continue reading

Iran showdown has echoes of faked Tonkin attack / Declassified study puts Vietnam events in new light

Iran showdown has echoes of faked Tonkin attack
Nick Juliano
January 11, 2008

A dramatic showdown at sea. Crossed communication signals. Apparently-hostile craft nearby. Sketchy intelligence leading to ratcheted up rhetoric.

The similarities between this week’s confrontation between US warships and Iranian speedboats and events off the coast of North Vietnam 44 years ago were too hard for many experts to miss, leading to the question: Is the Strait of Hormuz 2008’s Gulf of Tonkin?

On Aug. 2nd and 4th, 1964, the USS Maddox and the USS Turner Joy, patrolling off the North Vietnamese coast, intercepted signals indicating they were under attack. Within days, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which paved the way to the escalation of the Vietnam War. However, as some intelligence agents suspected at the time, the Aug. 2nd attack took place after the USS Maddox fired first, according to a National Security Agency report released in 1995.

This week another NSA report surfaced, confirming suspicions that the Aug. 4th attack never happened.

The researcher who uncovered the most recent NSA assessment tells RAW STORY that the Strait of Hormuz confrontation, and the immediate saber-rattling from the Bush administration and its allies, demonstrates the extent to which officials must be wary about politicizing shaky intelligence in times of war.

“The parallels (between Tonkin and Hormuz) speak for themselves, but what they say is that even the most basic factual assumptions can be made erroneously [or] can prove to be false,” Steven Aftergood of the Federation of American Scientists, told Raw Story.…
