Citizen’s Arrest of Alleged War Criminal George W. Bush in Canada: Trial Underway

SPS versus “W” in Court Hearings in Calgary

By Carol Brouillet
March 7, 2010 from Project Censored

Dacajaweiah, John Boncore, or Splitting the Sky, is not a man of few words. If you read his hefty 653-page autobiography, it is very clear that he has lived an extraordinary life and has survived more than his share of violence, to find deep within himself a well of energy and spirit enabling him to not only endure hardships, but to serve his people and the land in the timeless struggle against oppression and tyranny.…

New Research on State Crimes Against Democracy

By Peter Phillips and Mickey Huff

New research in the journal American Behavioral Scientist (Sage publications, February 2010) addresses the concept of “State Crimes Against Democracy” (SCAD). Professor Lance deHaven-Smith from Florida State University writes that SCADs involve highlevel government officials, often in combination with private interests, that engage in covert activities for political advantages and power. Proven SCADs since World War II include McCarthyism (fabrication of evidence of a communist infiltration), Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (President Johnson and Robert McNamara falsely claimed North Vietnam attacked a US ship), burglary of the office of Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist in effort to discredit Ellsberg, the Watergate break-in, Iran-Contra, Florida’s 2000 Election (felon disenfranchisement program), and fixed intelligence on WMDs to justify the Iraq War.…

The Higher Education Fiscal Crisis Protects the Wealthy

By Peter Phillips
November 22, 2009

Police are arresting and attacking student protesters on University of California (UC) campuses again. “Why did he beat me I wasn’t doing anything,” screamed a young Cal Berkeley women student over KPFA radio on Friday evening November 20. Students are protesting the 32% increase in tuition imposed by the UC regents in a time of severe state deficits. The Board of Regents claims that they have no choice. Students will now have to pay over $10,000 in tuition annually for a public university education that was free only a few decades ago.…

Charlie Sheen ‘Twenty Minutes’ Elicits Another Media Character Attack; Still No Coverage of Questions

Two weeks ago America’s media, led by the Washington Times and quickly followed by particularly vitriolic television personalities, blasted Obama-appointed “Green Jobs” Advisor Van Jones for various personal positions and actions taken over the course of his life as an activist. Chief among them was his name being counted among signatories (Van Jones has subsequently denied that he ever signed the 2004 Statement) to a Statement issued by in 2004 asking for answers to 9/11-related questions, signed by 150 other “notable Americans” and 9/11 victims’ family members.…

Taboo News and Corporate Media

By Peter Phillips

The corporate media in the United States are ignoring valid news stories, based on university quality research. It appears that certain topics are simply forbidden inside the mainstream corporate media today. To openly cover these news stories would stir up questions regarding “inconvenient truths” that many in the US power structure want to avoid.

For example, current research indicates that public schools in the United States are more segregated today than they have been in more than four decades.…

Deconstructing Deceit: 9/11, the Media, and Myth Information

by Mickey S. Huff and Paul W. Rea

They say goldfish have no memory
I guess their lives are much like mine
and the little plastic castle
is a surprise every time
and it’s hard to say if they’re happy
but they don’t seem much to mind.

–Ani DiFranco, Little Plastic Castles

For the past eight years, American culture has seen an outburst of media-driven mythmaking. Corporate mainstream media organizations, the pundits they sponsor, and politicians from both major parties have formed a new contextual chorus singing the same refrain: “On September 11th, 2001, everything changed.” From cable TV to AM radio, from the blogosphere to the town-hall meeting, Americans repeatedly hear that “this is a post-9/11 world.”

Although there is some truth to this platitude of pivotal change, independently minded citizens may also wonder whether such mass media messages have become self-fulfilling prophecies.…

Barack Obama Administration Continues US Military Global Dominance

By Peter Phillips

The Barack Obama administration is continuing the neo-conservative agenda of US military domination of the world–albeit with perhaps a kinder-gentler face. While overt torture is now forbidden for the CIA and Pentagon, and symbolic gestures like the closing of the Guantánamo prison are in evidence, a unilateral military dominance policy, expanding military budget, and wars of occupation and aggression will likely continue unabated.

The military expansionists from within the Reagan, George H. W.…

Well-Deserved Public Praise for Bonnie Faulkner’s ‘Guns and Butter’, on KPFA Community Radio Berkeley

Guns and Butter‘ affirms that if you’re not paranoid . . .

By P. Joseph Potocki
The Bohemian

Back in 2002, on the very first anniversary of the 9-11 attacks, KPFA 94.1-FM radio in Berkeley launched Guns and Butter , a locally produced, regionally broadcast weekly show that is possibly progressive radio’s most subversive. The program features muckraking intelligentsia from the fringe looking in and those from the geopolitical eye of the storm looking out.…

U.S. Perpetuates Mass Killings In Iraq

By Peter Phillips
July 18, 2008

The United States is directly responsible for over one million Iraqi deaths since the invasion five and half years ago. In a January 2008 report, a British polling group Opinion Research Business (ORB) reports that, “survey work confirms our earlier estimate that over 1,000,000 Iraqi citizens have died as a result of the conflict which started in 2003…. We now estimate that the death toll between March 2003 and August 2007 is likely to have been of the order of 1,033,000.…

An Election Without Meaning

By Peter Phillips
March 20, 2008

Will November 2008 bring a meaningful change to America? Will getting rid of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney without impeachment or indictment really make a difference? Will a 600 billion dollar war/defense budget be cut in half and used for desperately needed domestic spending? Will the ninety-three billion dollars profits in the private health insurance companies—those parasitic intermediates between you and your doctor—be used instead for full health care coverage for all?…

Mainstream vs. Main Street — A Santa Cruz conference looks to overthrow corporate media in favor of citizen journalism

By P. Joseph Potocki February 13, 2008

Against a backdrop of increasing public alarm over the power and reliability of corporate news sources, more than 300 progressive media activists, professionals and academics gathered in Santa Cruz over the weekend of Jan. 25-27. The task of the Independent Media Strategy Summit: to bust up corporate media domination by envisioning and launching a reliable, grassroots, equally powerful “main street media” alternative. So what happened and just how well did they do?…
