New Research on State Crimes Against Democracy

By Peter Phillips and Mickey Huff

New research in the journal American Behavioral Scientist (Sage publications, February 2010) addresses the concept of “State Crimes Against Democracy” (SCAD). Professor Lance deHaven-Smith from Florida State University writes that SCADs involve highlevel government officials, often in combination with private interests, that engage in covert activities for political advantages and power. Proven SCADs since World War II include McCarthyism (fabrication of evidence of a communist infiltration), Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (President Johnson and Robert McNamara falsely claimed North Vietnam attacked a US ship), burglary of the office of Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist in effort to discredit Ellsberg, the Watergate break-in, Iran-Contra, Florida’s 2000 Election (felon disenfranchisement program), and fixed intelligence on WMDs to justify the Iraq War.…

The Higher Education Fiscal Crisis Protects the Wealthy

By Peter Phillips
November 22, 2009

Police are arresting and attacking student protesters on University of California (UC) campuses again. “Why did he beat me I wasn’t doing anything,” screamed a young Cal Berkeley women student over KPFA radio on Friday evening November 20. Students are protesting the 32% increase in tuition imposed by the UC regents in a time of severe state deficits. The Board of Regents claims that they have no choice. Students will now have to pay over $10,000 in tuition annually for a public university education that was free only a few decades ago.…

Charlie Sheen ‘Twenty Minutes’ Elicits Another Media Character Attack; Still No Coverage of Questions

Two weeks ago America’s media, led by the Washington Times and quickly followed by particularly vitriolic television personalities, blasted Obama-appointed “Green Jobs” Advisor Van Jones for various personal positions and actions taken over the course of his life as an activist. Chief among them was his name being counted among signatories (Van Jones has subsequently denied that he ever signed the 2004 Statement) to a Statement issued by in 2004 asking for answers to 9/11-related questions, signed by 150 other “notable Americans” and 9/11 victims’ family members.…

Taboo News and Corporate Media

By Peter Phillips

The corporate media in the United States are ignoring valid news stories, based on university quality research. It appears that certain topics are simply forbidden inside the mainstream corporate media today. To openly cover these news stories would stir up questions regarding “inconvenient truths” that many in the US power structure want to avoid.

For example, current research indicates that public schools in the United States are more segregated today than they have been in more than four decades.…

The Importance of Including Truth Emergency Inside the International Progressive Media Reform Movement

By Peter Phillips and Mickey Huff
July 9, 2009

An international truth emergency, now in evidence, is the result of fraudulent
elections, compromised 9/11 investigations, illegal preemptive wars, and continued
top down corporate media propaganda across the spectrum on public issues. Glenn
Beck recently was able to say on national Fox News television that 9/11 Truth
people openly supported the shooting at the Holocaust Museum. Beck claimed that
9/11 truth proponents see James von Brunn as a “hero.” Beck’s
statement is completely without factual merit and represents a hyperrealist
slamming of a group already slanderously pre-labeled by the corporate media
as “conspiracy theorists.”

Conspiracies tend to be actions by small groups of individuals rather than massive
collective plots by entire governments.…

New Book by David Ray Griffin, ‘Osama bin Laden: Dead or Alive?’

Griffin--Bin Laden Dead or Alive cover

The US’s political discourse and foreign policy in recent years has been based on the assumption that Osama bin Laden is still alive. George W. Bush promised as president that he would get Osama bin Laden “dead or alive” and has been widely criticized for failing to do so. The US’s present military escalation in Afghanistan is said to be necessary to “get Osama bin Laden.” The news media regularly announce the appearance of new “messages from bin Laden.” But what if Osama bin Laden died in December 2001–which is the last time a message to or from him was intercepted?…

Barack Obama Administration Continues US Military Global Dominance

By Peter Phillips

The Barack Obama administration is continuing the neo-conservative agenda of US military domination of the world–albeit with perhaps a kinder-gentler face. While overt torture is now forbidden for the CIA and Pentagon, and symbolic gestures like the closing of the Guantánamo prison are in evidence, a unilateral military dominance policy, expanding military budget, and wars of occupation and aggression will likely continue unabated.

The military expansionists from within the Reagan, George H. W.…

U.S. Perpetuates Mass Killings In Iraq

By Peter Phillips
July 18, 2008

The United States is directly responsible for over one million Iraqi deaths since the invasion five and half years ago. In a January 2008 report, a British polling group Opinion Research Business (ORB) reports that, “survey work confirms our earlier estimate that over 1,000,000 Iraqi citizens have died as a result of the conflict which started in 2003…. We now estimate that the death toll between March 2003 and August 2007 is likely to have been of the order of 1,033,000.…

An Election Without Meaning

By Peter Phillips
March 20, 2008

Will November 2008 bring a meaningful change to America? Will getting rid of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney without impeachment or indictment really make a difference? Will a 600 billion dollar war/defense budget be cut in half and used for desperately needed domestic spending? Will the ninety-three billion dollars profits in the private health insurance companies—those parasitic intermediates between you and your doctor—be used instead for full health care coverage for all?…

Mainstream vs. Main Street — A Santa Cruz conference looks to overthrow corporate media in favor of citizen journalism

By P. Joseph Potocki February 13, 2008

Against a backdrop of increasing public alarm over the power and reliability of corporate news sources, more than 300 progressive media activists, professionals and academics gathered in Santa Cruz over the weekend of Jan. 25-27. The task of the Independent Media Strategy Summit: to bust up corporate media domination by envisioning and launching a reliable, grassroots, equally powerful “main street media” alternative. So what happened and just how well did they do?…

LIVE from Santa Cruz — Media Summit Remote Participation Encouraged

NOW!! Truth Emergency US
Santa Cruz Media Summit: Live this weekend Jan. 25-27

Update by Peter Phillips and David Kubiak

Many economists now doubt that government measures can prevent a major recession given the severe slump in the housing market, the subprime mortgage crisis, growing unemployment, declining consumer spending, and record high oil prices. Even harder times for working people are undoubtedly at hand, yet mainstream corporate media continues to lavish more attention on the Super Bowl and celebrity misadventures than measures to protect Americans from grave personal economic harm.…

Worrisome civil liberty news censored by media

By Peter Phillips
Published Friday, September 07, 2007

We need to broaden our understanding of censorship in the United States. No
longer is the dictionary definition of direct government control of news adequate.
The private corporate media in the United States significantly under-cover and/or
deliberately censor numerous important news stories every year as well.

Project Censored at Sonoma State University has annually researched these stories
for 31 years. Over 200 faculty, community experts, and students, select and
rank the stories the media failed to cover.…
