Searching for truth in Wayne

Note from Jon Gold: This article will be appearing on the front page (2/13/2008) of Main Line Life . To my knowledge, an article like this has never appeared in a newspaper before. Never. Not in the United States, and not in the World. This is what journalism should be. Honest, with no agenda. I would like to give Jeff Cobb my sincerest thanks. You have shown courage and integrity the likes of which haven’t been seen in journalism for a very long time. I would like to thank Main Line Life for publishing this article. Hopefully more newspapers across the country, and the world will follow your example. Thank you to Jaime, and everyone at the Anthony Wayne Theater. You have been such a big help. Congratulations, and a HUGE thank you to Betsy Metz for making all of this possible. You are a true American Hero. – Jon

Documentaries question official explanations of the Sept. 11 attacks.

By Jeff Cobb 2/13/2008

They realize their topic is big; its implications disturbing, but they are compelled by inner conviction.

On Tuesday nights in downtown Wayne, since Jan. 1, Betsy Metz, of Devon, and Jon Gold, of Plymouth Meeting have been sponsoring documentaries at the Wayne Theater that dispute the official explanations of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

They intend to show the videos through February and describe themselves as everyday citizens accruing out-of-pocket costs. Theirs is one effort among several around the country attempting to spur interest and they… Continue reading

September 11th Advocates (‘Jersey Girls’) Comment on the Impending Release of Philip Shenon’s Book

February 6, 2008
Coleen Rowley

As someone also motivated by the need for the truth about 9/11, as well as aware of the way conflicts of interest have a way of covering up truth, let me add my thanks to Philip Shenon on the release of his new book. Also let me share this recent comment forwarded to me by Monica Gabrielle of the September 11th Advocates:
*****

Philip Shenon’s new book, The Commission: The Uncensored History of the 9/11 Investigation, serves to justify our suspicions and the concerns of the Family Steering Committee, that we attempted to publicly air during the course of the 9/11 Commission’s tenure.

One of the most egregious revelations put forth by Mr. Shenon is the fact that Philip Zelikow was hired as the Executive Director of the 9/11 Commission, despite his direct ties to the Bush administration. In 2000-2001 he served as a member of Condoleezza Rice’s National Security Council (NSC) transition team, where he was allegedly the “architect” of the decision to demote Richard Clarke and his counter terrorism team within the NSC. Furthermore he was a member of the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board (PFIAB) from 2001-2003, where Zelikow drafted most of the 2002 “National Security Strategy of the United States,” creating the pre-emptive Iraq war strategy. These areas were within the scope of the Commission’s mandate and as such were of critical importance to determine what, if any, impact they had on the government’s ability to prevent the 9/11 attacks.

As the Executive Director of the 9/11 Commission, Philip Zelikow was given the responsibility for choosing the entire direction of the Commission’s investigation.…

Is Michael Mukasey Prioritizing the Harassment and Imprisonment of Journalists?

by Glenn Greenwald
Published on Sunday, February 3, 2008 by Salon.com

Ever since the President’s illegal warrantless eavesdropping program was revealed by the New York Times’ Jim Risen and Eric Lichtblau back in December, 2005, there has been a faction of neoconservatives and other extremists on the Right calling for the NYT reporters and editors to be criminally prosecuted — led by the likes of Bill Kristol (now of the NYT), Bill Bennett (of CNN), Commentary Magazine and many others. In May, 2006, Alberto Gonzales went on ABC News and revealed that the DOJ had commenced a criminal investigation into the leak, and then “raised the possibility [] that New York Times journalists could be prosecuted for publishing classified information.”

That was one of the more revealing steps ever taken by Bush’s DOJ under Gonzales: the administration violated multiple federal laws for years in spying on Americans, blocked all efforts to investigate what they did or subject it to the rule of law, but then decided that the only real criminals were those who alerted the nation to their lawbreaking — whistleblowers and journalists alike. Even Gonzales’ public musing about criminal prosecutions could have had a devastating effect — if you’re a whistleblower or journalist who uncovers secret government lawbreaking, you’re obviously going to think twice (at least) before bringing it to light, given the public threats by the Attorney General to criminally prosecute those who do.

Eighteen months have passed since Gonzales’ threats, and while there have been… Continue reading

In his new book, The Commission: The Uncensored History of the 9/11 Investigation, New York Times investigative journalist Philip Shenon scrutinizes those charged with analyzing the terror attacks and uncovers new information about the commission’s complicated relationship with the Bush White House

Chapter 1: National Archives

Washington, DC, May 30, 2002

Sandy Berger walked down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the row of massive Corinthian columns that were the most notable architectural feature of the National Archives. The public entrance to the archives was around the corner on Constitution Avenue, and it would normally be jammed with throngs of boisterous tourists on such a bright spring morning, eager to gaze upon the great documents of -American democracy. But on the day of Berger’s first visit, the few out-of-town visitors who did not have special permission to enter the archives were turned away.…

Ties Between White House, Sept 11 Chief

By HOPE YEN
February 4, 2008;

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Sept. 11 commission’s executive director had closer
ties with the White House than publicly disclosed and tried to influence the
final report in ways that the staff often perceived as limiting the Bush administration’s
responsibility, a new book says.

Philip Zelikow, a friend of then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice,
spoke with her several times during the 20-month investigation that closely
examined her role in assessing the al-Qaida threat. He also exchanged frequent
calls with the White House, including at least four from Bush’s chief political
adviser at the time, Karl Rove.

Zelikow once tried to push through wording in a draft report that suggested
a greater tie between al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and Iraq, in line with
White House claims but not with the commission staff’s viewpoint, according
to Philip Shenon’s "The Commission: The Uncensored History of the 9/11
Investigation."

Shenon, a New York Times reporter, says Zelikow sought to intimidate
staff to avoid damaging findings for President Bush, who at the time was running
for re-election, and Rice. Zelikow and Rice had written a book together in 1995
and he would later work for her after the commission finished its job and she
became secretary of state in 2005.

The Associated Press obtained an audio version of Shenon’s book, which is to
go on sale Tuesday.

Reached by the AP, Zelikow provided a 131-page statement with information he
said was provided for the book. In it, Zelikow acknowledges… Continue reading

Why Were The Tapes Destroyed?

Paul Craig Roberts
February 2, 2008

Many Americans are content with the 9/11 Commission Report, but the two chairmen of the commission, Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton are not. Neither was commission member Max Cleland, a US Senator who resigned from the 9/11 Commission, telling the Boston Globe (November 13, 2003): “This investigation is now compromised.” Even former FBI director Louis Freeh wrote in the Wall Street Journal (Nov. 17, 2005) that there are inaccuracies in the commission’s report and “questions that need answers.”

Both Kean and Hamilton have twice stated publicly, once in their 2006 book, Without Precedent: The Inside Story of the 9/11 Commission, and again in the January 2, 2008, New York Times, that there are inaccuracies in their report and unanswered–or mis-answered–questions.

On the second day of this new year, Kean and Hamilton accused the CIA of obstructing their investigation: “What we do know is that government officials decided not to inform a lawfully constituted body, created by Congress and the President, to investigate one of the greatest tragedies to confront this country. We call that obstruction.”

In their book, Kean and Hamilton wrote that they were unable to obtain “access to star witnesses in custody who were the only possible source for inside information about the 9/11 plot.”

The only information the commission was permitted to have about what was learned from interrogations of alleged plot ringleaders, such as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, came from “thirdhand” sources. The commission was not permitted to… Continue reading

Ex-9/11 Panel Chief Denies Secret White House Ties

by Justin Rood
Jan. 30, 2008—

The former executive director of the 9/11 Commission denies explosive charges
of undisclosed ties to the Bush White House or interference with the panel’s
report.

The charges are said to be contained in New York Times reporter Philip Shenon’s
unreleased book, "The Commission: The Uncensored History of the 9/11 Investigation,"
according to Max Holland, an author and blogger, and generally confirmed by
the book’s publisher. Although the book is not slated to hit stores until early
next month, Holland says he bought a copy of the audio version at a bookstore.
(Attempts to purchase the book, in any format, at the Barnes & Noble across
the street from ABC News headquarters were unsuccessful.)

9/11 Commission co-chairs Tom Kean and Lee Hamilton hired former Condoleezza
Rice aide Philip Zelikow to be executive director, Zelikow failed to tell them
about his role helping Rice set up President George W. Bush’s National Security
Council in early 2001 and that he was "instrumental" in demoting
Richard Clarke, the onetime White House counterterrorism czar who was fixated
on the threat from Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda, according to Holland’s version
of Shenon’s tome.

"[Zelikow] had laid the groundwork for much of what went wrong at the
White House in the weeks and months before September 11. Would he want people
to know that?" Shenon writes, according to Holland.

Zelikow denied that was the case. "It was very well-known I had served
on this transition team and… Continue reading

Iran showdown has echoes of faked Tonkin attack / Declassified study puts Vietnam events in new light

Iran showdown has echoes of faked Tonkin attack
Nick Juliano
January 11, 2008

A dramatic showdown at sea. Crossed communication signals. Apparently-hostile craft nearby. Sketchy intelligence leading to ratcheted up rhetoric.

The similarities between this week’s confrontation between US warships and Iranian speedboats and events off the coast of North Vietnam 44 years ago were too hard for many experts to miss, leading to the question: Is the Strait of Hormuz 2008′s Gulf of Tonkin?

On Aug. 2nd and 4th, 1964, the USS Maddox and the USS Turner Joy, patrolling off the North Vietnamese coast, intercepted signals indicating they were under attack. Within days, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which paved the way to the escalation of the Vietnam War. However, as some intelligence agents suspected at the time, the Aug. 2nd attack took place after the USS Maddox fired first, according to a National Security Agency report released in 1995.

This week another NSA report surfaced, confirming suspicions that the Aug. 4th attack never happened.

The researcher who uncovered the most recent NSA assessment tells RAW STORY that the Strait of Hormuz confrontation, and the immediate saber-rattling from the Bush administration and its allies, demonstrates the extent to which officials must be wary about politicizing shaky intelligence in times of war.

“The parallels (between Tonkin and Hormuz) speak for themselves, but what they say is that even the most basic factual assumptions can be made erroneously [or] can prove to be false,” Steven Aftergood of the Federation of American Scientists, told Raw Story.…

Eight U.S. State Department Veterans Challenge the Official Account of 9/11

by Alan Miller

Official Account of 9/11: “Flawed”, “Absurd”, “Totally Inadequate”, “a Cover-up”

January 5, 2008 — Eight U.S. State Department veterans have severely criticized the official account of 9/11 and called for a new investigation. “There is no question in my mind, that there is enough evidence to justify a very comprehensive and hard hitting investigation of the kind we have not seen, with subpoenas, general questioning of people, releasing a lot of documents,” said Daniel Ellsberg, PhD, in a 2006 interview with Jack Blood. [1]

Daniel Ellsberg, Phd is one of many signers of a petition to reinvestigate 9/11. [2] Best known for leaking the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times in 1971, Dr. Ellsberg is a former U.S. State Department envoy to Viet Nam and Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense.

Another State Department critic of the official account of 9/11 is Col. Ann Wright, who said in a 2007 interview with Richard Greene on the Air America Radio Network, “It’s incredible some of these things that still are unanswered. The 9/11 Report — that was totally inadequate. I mean the questions that anybody has after reading that.” [3]

Col. Ann Wright is one of three U.S. State Department officials to publicly resign in direct protest of the invasion of Iraq in March, 2003. She joined the Foreign Service in 1987 and served for 16 years as a U.S. Diplomat, including assignments as Deputy Chief of Mission of U.S. Embassies in Sierra Leone, Micronesia… Continue reading

* The formation of 911Truth.org after that conference
* The dissemination of the “Stop the 9/11 Cover Up” signs to groups nationwide (911visibility)
* David Ray Griffin’s earth shaking work
* Professor Steven Jones physics research
* Kevin Ryan’s blowing the whistle on inaccuracies of UL’s report to NIST
* The release of Loose Change, which exploded the movement

9/11 Contradictions: Bush in the Classroom

by Dr. David Ray Griffin

Dr. David Ray GriffinThe official story of 9/11 is riddled with internal contradictions. One of these contradictions involves the question of how long President Bush remained in classroom in Sarasota, Florida, on the morning of 9/11.

Bush was there to publicize his education policy by being photographed listening to students read. He arrived at the school at 8:55 AM, at which time he reportedly first learned that a plane had struck one of the Twin Towers. Dismissing the crash as an accident, Bush said that they would go ahead and “do the reading thing anyway.”

Bush entered the second-grade classroom of teacher Sandra Kay Daniels at about 9:03. At about 9:06, the president’s chief of staff, Andrew Card, came in and whispered in Bush’s ear, telling him, Card later reported, “A second plane hit the second Tower. America is under attack.”

What Happened Next

Thanks to Michael Moore’s film Fahrenheit 9/11, which came out in 2004, the world knows what happened next: Bush remained sitting there minute after minute after minute.

Journalists, however, had reported Bush’s strange behaviour much earlier. On September 1, 2002, for example, Jennifer Barrs had reported in the Tampa Tribune that, after Card whispered in Bush’s ear, the president picked up his book and read with the children “for eight or nine minutes.” In his 2002 book Fighting Back, Bill Sammon, the White House correspondent for the Washington Times, said that even after the reading lesson was over, Bush… Continue reading

Impeach Cheney Movement Gathers Momentum – Opportunity for 9/11 Issues to Come Forward

January 3, 2007
by Carl Weis

Representative Robert Wexler (D-FL 19th), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, has established a website,www.wexlerwantshearings.com, inviting public support for his call to hold hearings on the Kucinich H.R. 333/799, a bill to impeach the vice president.

H.R. 333, introduced on April 24, 2007, languished motionless, though it gathered twenty-two co-sponsors, until November 6, when its author, Ohio Democrat and presidential candidate, Dennis Kucinich, brought it to the House floor as a privileged motion. The bill has three articles outlining some of the high crimes and misdemeanors alleged against the vice president. The first two articles concern the misrepresentation of intelligence about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and Iraqi ties to al Qaida in the run-up to the war, launched in March of ’03. The third pertains to the more recent lies about and threats to launch an illegal war against Iran.

The bill created unexpected drama on the House floor. Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) made an immediate and expected motion to table, a move that would, if passed, have effectively killed the bill. A recorded vote was called and early voting marched along at more than 2:1 in favor of no debate. Then, as the tally reached around 250 to table, an extraordinary turnaround began. A significant number of Republican votes began to change. There was a rising buzz on the floor, audible as C-Span monitored the process, when votes for debate overtook those for tabling. When the dust had settled, it was 251-162 against tabling, a majority of Republicans joined by only 86 Democrats favoring debate.…

When Will You Say It’s Time?

by Donna Marsh O’Connor

Kean and Hamilton issued a statement today, January 2, 2008 (only six-plus years since 9/11/2001) that was “just-inned” on CNN. They published an editorial in the New York Times today. Their position: Their work was blocked, the investigation tainted. They repeatedly asked for tapes from the CIA that were never provided. They came just short of calling for a real investigation. They (as they have done since the beginning) left that work to the victims’ families.

Will you now cover 9/11 truth, not as a series of destructive conspiracy theories, but as a movement inhabited by sane citizens from all walks of life (scientists, CIA whistleblowers, theologians, professors, researchers, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and more) as well as family members of the victims who deserve as patriotic Americans the answers to the lingering questions of that day? Will you now take up the call first put together in mainstream media by the four heroic widows from New Jersey?

My daughter, Vanessa Lang Langer was pregnant and pulled from the pile whole and intact on 9/24/2001. She was found ten feet from an alley. Five minutes after the first plane hit Tower I, she was on the phone to the uptown office of Regus Business International, telling a colleague that those in Tower II were told they were safe. That five minutes and the seventeen minutes between those planes (yes, I do believe there were planes) were two lifetimes in my own world. She must have been… Continue reading

Creeping Fascism: History’s Lessons

By Ray McGovern
December 27, 2007

“There are few things as odd as the calm, superior indifference with which I and those like me watched the beginnings of the Nazi revolution in Germany, as if from a box at the theater. … Perhaps the only comparably odd thing is the way that now, years later….”

These are the words of Sebastian Haffner (pen name for Raimund Pretzel), who as a young lawyer in Berlin during the 1930s experienced the Nazi takeover and wrote a first-hand account. His children found the manuscript when he died in 1999 and published it the following year as “Geschichte eines Deutschen” (The Story of a German).

The book became an immediate bestseller and has been translated into 20 languages–in English as “Defying Hitler.”

I recently learned from his daughter Sarah, an artist in Berlin, that today is the 100th anniversary of Haffner’s birth. She had seen an earlier article in which I quoted her father and e-mailed to ask me to “write some more about the book and the comparison to Bush’s America. … This is almost unbelievable.”

More about Haffner below. Let’s set the stage first by recapping some of what has been going on that may have resonance for readers familiar with the Nazi ascendancy, noting how “odd” it is that the frontal attack on our Constitutional rights is met with such “calm, superior indifference.”

The Shell Game by Steve Alten

New York Times bestselling author Steve Alten is releasing a novel January
22nd which addresses the 9/11 stand down, the injection of false radar blips
into air traffic controllers’ screens, PNAC, the 9/11 Commission whitewash,
the Anthrax attacks, and related issues.

Written in the exciting, cloak-and-dagger style of Tom Clancy, the novel —
The Shell Game — has a shot at educating a large segment of the American public
who would otherwise remain in the dark about some aspects of 9/11.

Alten is well-aware of media censorship of 9/11 truth (for example, he agrees
with this analysis, he also sent me an advance copy of the book), and is trying
to break through the media blockade using his resume as bestselling author to
spread his message.

I just finished reading The Shell Game, and caught up with Alten by email.

GW: I really like The Shell Game, Steve. It had me on the edge of my seat,
and I stayed up later than I should have a couple of nights to finish it.

SA: My books tend to be … page-turners. The Shell Game does that and adds
another twist … it’s all real, or it predicts what may really happen unless
we stop the insanity. To stop it you must first be aware of it.

GW: If enough people read The Shell Game, it could bypass media censorship
regarding 9/11 and reach people… Continue reading

CIA obstructed 9/11 investigators: report

Sat Dec 22, 2007

The CIA obstructed an official US investigation into the September 11 attacks
by withholding tapes of interrogations of Al-Qaeda operatives, according to
former investigators quoted in a report on Saturday.

A review of documents by former members of the 9/11 commission revealed the
panel made repeated, detailed requests to the spy agency in 2003 and 2004 for
information about the interrogation of members of the extremist network, but
were never notified of the tapes, the New York Times reported.

The review of the commission’s correspondence with the Central Intelligence
Agency came after the agency earlier this month revealed it had destroyed videotapes
in 2005 that showed harsh interrogations of two Al-Qaeda members.

The review, written up in a December 13 memo prepared by Philip Zelikow, the
former executive director of the 9/11 commission, said that “further investigation
is needed” to resolve whether the CIA’s failure to hand over the tapes
violated federal law.

The memorandum does not assert that withholding the tapes was illegal but states
that federal law penalizes anyone who “knowingly and wilfully” withholds
or “covers up” a “material fact” from a federal inquiry,
the newspaper said.

The revelation adds to pressure on President George W. Bush’s administration,
already under fire over the affair by human rights groups and lawmakers who
allege that destroying the tapes covered up proof of torture.

Responding to the New York Times report, the CIA said the commission never
specifically asked for interrogation videos.

“I’d say what she has is far more explosive than the Pentagon Papers,”
Daniel Ellsberg told us in regard to former FBI translator turned whistleblower
Sibel Edmonds.

“From what I understand, from what she has to tell, it has a major difference
from the Pentagon Papers in that it deals directly with criminal activity and
may involve impeachable offenses,” Ellsberg explained. “And I don’t
necessarily mean the President or the Vice-President, though I wouldn’t be surprised
if the information reached up that high. But other members of the Executive
Branch may be impeached as well. And she says similar about Congress.”

The BRAD BLOG spoke recently with the legendary 1970′s-era whistleblower in
the wake of our recent exclusive, detailing Edmonds’ announce that she was prepared
to risk prosecution to expose the entirety of the still-classified information
that the Bush Administration has “gagged” her from revealing for the
