The meeting at the Jones Library in Amherst, Massachusetts on July 5, 2007 was anything but routine. Seated before Cong. John Olver (D-MA) were twenty seasoned citizens from over a dozen municipalities in this First Congressional District which embraces the lovely Berkshire Hills.
The subject–impeachment of George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney.
The request–that Cong. Olver join the impeachment drive in Congress.
More than just opinion was being conveyed to Cong. Olver, a then 70 year old Massachusetts liberal with a Ph.D. in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These Americans voted overwhelmingly during formal annual town meetings in 14 towns and two cities in the First District endorsing resolutions to impeach the President and Vice President.
Presented in the form of petitions to be sent to the Congress, the approving citizenry cited at least four “high crimes and misdemeanors.”
They included the initiation of the Iraq war based on defrauding the public and intentionally misleading the Congress, spying on Americans without judicial authorization, committing the torture of prisoners in violation of both federal law and the U.N.…Continue reading

*Impeachment Next Step: Judiciary Committee HEARINGS*
(Ed.: What follows has been adapted, with appreciation, from Democrats.com. Lest you think this is a “Democrats-only” issue, please see the two articles at the end of this call to action.)
Thanks to Dennis Kucinich, Tuesday was an historic day for impeachment!
As promised, Kucinich requested a floor vote on H.Res. 333, and as expected, BushDemocrat Leader Steny Hoyer moved to table the bill. And then all hell broke loose as 165 Republicans voted with Kucinich and 85 other brave Democrats to force a debate on impeachment and thereby embarass Nancy Pelosi.
To block that debate, Hoyer moved to send H.Res. 333 back to the Judiciary Committee, and that motion passed with the support of all but 5 Democrats (Kucinich, Bob Filner, Marcy Kaptur, Maxine Waters, and Ed Towns). A live blog of the proceedings is posted at http://impeachcheney.org
Representatives Wexler and Shea-Porter have now announced support for hearings:
In an e-mail to supporters on November 7, 2007, Representative Robert Wexler, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, stated that
I will urge the Judiciary Committee to schedule impeachment hearings immediately and not let this issue languish as it has over the last six months.…
You wouldn’t know it if you just watch TV news or read the corporate press,
but this past Tuesday, something remarkable happened. Despite the pig-headed
opposition of the Democratic Party’s top congressional leadership, a majority
of the House, including three Republicans, voted to send Dennis Kucinich’s long
sidelined Cheney impeachment bill (H Res 333) to the Judiciary Committee for
The vote was 218 to 194.
Now the behind-the-scenes partisan maneuvering that preceded that vote was
arcane indeed, with Kucinich first exercising a member’s privilege motion to
present his stymied impeachment bill to the full House, only to have Speaker
Nancy Pelosi arrange for a colleague (Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-MD) to
offer a motion to table it. The Republicans, anxious to embarrass the Speaker,
threw a wrench into that plan, though, by voting as a bloc to oppose tabling.
Since Kucinich already has 22 co-sponsors for his bill, it was clear that the
tabling gambit would fail. As soon as that became apparent, rank-and-file Democrats,
unwilling to be seen by their constituents as defending Cheney, rushed to change
their votes to opposing the tabling motion. In the end, tabling failed by 242
to 170 with 77 Democrats supporting a pleasantly surprised Kucinich.
To avoid a floor debate on the merits of impeaching the eminently impeachable
Vice President Cheney, Pelosi and her allies then moved to send Kucinich’s bill
directly to the Judiciary Committee. They were joined by three Republicans,
including maverick Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul (R-TX).

Americans had best rethink the “war on terror” while they still have
the liberty to do so. For all of President Bush’s blah-blah talk about bringing
democracy to the world, the Bush administration has proved that it is no friend
of liberty at home.
The Bush administration has violated constitutional principles, US law, and
the Geneva Conventions as no previous administration has done. Here is a short
list of the Bush administration’s crimes:
Spying without court warrants on Americans in violation of both the US Constitution
and the FISA statute.
The denial of habeas corpus, attorney-client privilege, due process, and Geneva
Conventions protections to those, American or foreign, designated without evidence
as terrorists or enemy combatants.
The justification and use of torture to coerce confessions and the kidnapping
of foreign nationals who are sent to be tortured in foreign prisons.
The initiation of military aggression against states based on intentional deception
by the Bush administration of the US public and the United Nations, and the
intentional fabrication of “evidence” to justify unprovoked aggression
against sovereign states, which is a war crime under the Nuremberg standard
established by the US.
Violation of the oath of office to defend the US Constitution by practically
every member of the Bush administration and Congress.
Bush has assaulted the separation of powers and the rule of law with “signing
statements” and “executive orders” that President Nixon’s White
House Counsel John Dean says are commands that treat the co-equal… Continue reading

We Must Support H.Res. 333 To Impeach Cheney
Dennis Kucinich has stepped forward to bring the resolution to
impeach Cheney as a privileged resolution. This means that the House
is forced to consider it. So what are the so-called leaders of the
House planning on doing? They are “planning” on trying to quash
debate with an obscure parliamentary trick called a “motion to
table”. So what are we planning on doing?
We’re planning on calling each and every member of the House of
Representatives and demand that they actually represent us. We’re
planning on demanding that they support H.Res. 333 and give it a full
and free debate and hearing, and to reject the motion to table. We’re
planning on telling them that unless they stand up for the people
now, we will find new and different candidates for their seats,
through primary challenges if necessary in the very next election.
Here again, we have created a special web page where you can lookup
the local district office phone numbers of your own personal house
H.Res 333 Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/hres333.php
Again, if you can’t get through to your house member in Washington,
use the instant lookup function on the page above to get the name of
your own representative and all their local phone numbers.
Unless Cheney is impeached they will absolutely bomb Iran. Unless
Cheney is impeached they will absolutely start World War 3, and very
likely declare martial law and officially suspend the constitution,
as just happened in Pakistan.…
The National Lawyers Guild on Friday unanimously and enthusiastically passed a resolution supporting the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.
Resolution on Impeachment of Bush and Cheney
Whereas George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney:
1. deliberately misled the nation and doctored intelligence, as described in the Downing Street minutes, http://www.downingstreetmemo.com/memos.html about the threat from Iraq in order to justify a war of aggression and an occupation of Iraq, as further described in House resolution H.Res. 333: http://kucinich.house.gov/UploadedFiles/int3.pdf and as listed in House Resolution H. Res. 635: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=hr109-635

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) announced he would move to force a vote next week on his resolution calling for the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney.
“The momentum is building for impeachment,” Kucinich said in a statement on his Web site. “Millions of citizens across the nation are demanding Congress rein in the Vice President’s abuse of power.
Kucinich said he plans to introduce a privileged resolution, which would have priority for a House floor vote, on Nov. 6. A vote on the measure would be required within two days.
Observers expect a motion to table Kucinich’s resolution, which has 21 Democratic co-sponsors. It is almost certain that such a move to kill the resolution would be successful, but activists are urging members of Congress to support Kucinich’s move.
“We need you to ask your representative to vote No on tabling, Yes on giving impeachment a chance,” wrote David Swanson on the pro-impeachment Website AfterDowningStreet.org. “Those who vote Yes to table cannot use the excuse that ‘We don’t have the votes,’ since others will at that same instant with exactly the same exertion be voting No. Please scroll down to contact Congress and the media right away!”
Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has long said that impeachment was “off the table” and Kucinich has had little success spurring legislative action on his resolutions, despite the growing number of lawmakers who have signed on as co-sponsors since it was introduced this spring.
Kucinich’s full statement… Continue reading

JURIST Guest Columnist Brian J. Foley of Drexel University College of Law says that on the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we should remember that the US government has steadfastly refused to allow investigations that might locate individual blame for this massive security failure…
After major tragedies there are two investigative roads to take in trying to prevent a repeat: determining whether people or policies are to blame. Blaming people entails asking whether the disaster resulted from people failing to design or execute a proper preventive policy (“human error”). Blaming policy entails asking whether the policy failed either because the risk was not foreseeable, or because the harm simply cannot be prevented (“act of God”). Both roads should be taken.
After 9/11, however, the nation raced headlong into blaming policy alone. The prevailing view was stated by then-National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice in May, 2002: “I don’t think anybody could have predicted that these people would … try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile.” But such danger had been imagined, years earlier. For example, in 1994, terrorists hijacked a French airliner seeking to crash it into the Eiffel Tower. Tom Clancy’s best-selling novel Debt of Honor (1994) ends with a Japanese airline pilot crashing his 747 into the U.S. Capitol (pp. 985-86). President Clinton and his staff also understood that an airplane could be used as a missile after a suicidal man piloted a Cessna into the White House lawn, just below the president’s bedroom, in the early hours of September 12, 1994.…Continue reading

US Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) has announced the conduct of major war games
under Vigilant Shield 2008 (VS-08).
Vigilant Shield 2008 (15 to 20 October, 2007) is designed to deal with a “terrorist”
or “natural disaster” scenario in the United States. The operation
will be coordinated in a joint endeavor by the Pentagon and the Department of
Yet, VS-08, which includes a massive deployment of the US Air Force resembles
a war-time air scenario rather than an anti-terrorist drill. The VS-08 war games
extend over the entire North American shelf. Canadian territory is also involved
through Canada’s participation in NORAD. (See Nazemroaya, October 2007)
These war games are being conducted at an important historical crossroads,
amidst mounting US pressures and threats to actually declare a “real war”
VS-08 is predicated on the doctrine of preemptive warfare, with a vie to protecting
the Homeland. The war games are coordinated with anti-terrorist drills directed
against presumed Islamic terrorists.
Moreover, the announcement by NORTHCOM of the VS-08 war games-anti-terror drills
coincided with a declaration by the Bush administration in early September that
military action against Iran is being contemplated at the highest echelons of
the US government and Military:
“President George W Bush and his inner circle are taking steps to place…
America on the path to war with Iran, .. Pentagon planners have developed
a list of up to 2,000 bombing targets in Iran, … Pentagon and CIA officers
say they believe that the White House has begun a carefully calibrated programme
of escalation that could lead to a military showdown with Iran.
Gary Hart warns Iran to beware Cheney false-flag provocation for U.S. attack
Sept. 28. The following brief open letter is from Gary Hart, the former Democratic senator from Colorado and winner of presidential primaries in 1984, also the co-author of the much-cited 2000 Hart-Rudman report on terrorism, writing in the Huffington Post yesterday in the form of
“Unsolicited Advice to the Government of Iran”
Presuming that you are not actually ignorant enough to desire war with the United States, you might be well advised to read the history of the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana harbor in 1898 and the history of the Gulf of Tonkin in 1964.
Having done so, you will surely recognize that Americans are reluctant to go to war unless attacked. Until Pearl Harbor, we were even reluctant to get involved in World War II. For historians of American wars the question is whether we provoke provocations.
Given the unilateral U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, you are obviously thinking the rules have changed. Provocation is no longer required to take America to war. But even in this instance, we were led to believe that the mass murderer of American civilians, Osama bin Laden, was lurking, literally or figuratively, in the vicinity of Baghdad.
Given all this, you would probably be well advised to keep your forces, including clandestine forces, as far away from the Iraqi border as you can. You might even consider bringing in some… Continue reading
‘A Coup Has Occurred’
By Daniel Ellsberg
September 26, 2007 (Text of a speech delivered September 20, 2007)
Consortium Editor’s Note: Daniel Ellsberg, the former
Defense Department analyst who leaked the secret Pentagon Papers history of
the Vietnam War, offered insights into the looming war with Iran and the loss
of liberty in the United States at an American University symposium on Sept.
Below is an edited transcript of Ellsberg’s remarkable speech:
I think nothing has higher priority than averting an attack on Iran, which
I think will be accompanied by a further change in our way of governing here
that in effect will convert us into what I would call a police state.
If there’s another 9/11 under this regime … it means that they
switch on full extent all the apparatus of a police state that has been patiently
constructed, largely secretly at first but eventually leaked out and known and
accepted by the Democratic people in Congress, by the Republicans and so forth.
Will there be anything left for NSA to increase its surveillance of us? …
They may be to the limit of their technical capability now, or they may not.
But if they’re not now they will be after another 9/11.
And I would say after the Iranian retaliation to an American attack on Iran,
you will then see an increased attack on Iran — an escalation —
which will be also accompanied by a total suppression of dissent in this country,
including… Continue reading

Official Account of 9/11 a “Joke” and a “Cover-up”
September 23, 2007 — Seven CIA veterans have severely criticized the official account of 9/11 and have called for a new investigation. “I think at simplest terms, there’s a cover-up. The 9/11 Report is a joke,” said Raymond McGovern, 27-year veteran of the CIA, who chaired National Intelligence Estimates during the seventies. “There are a whole bunch of unanswered questions. And the reason they’re unanswered is because this administration will not answer the questions,” he said. McGovern, who is also the founder of VIPS (Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity), is one of many signers of a petition to reinvestigate 9/11.
During his 27-year CIA career, McGovern personally delivered intelligence briefings to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, their Vice Presidents, Secretaries of State, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and many other senior government officials. Upon retirement in 1990, McGovern was awarded the CIA’s Intelligence Commendation Medallion and received a letter of appreciation from then President George H. W. Bush. However, McGovern returned the award in 2006 in protest of the current George W. Bush Administration’s advocacy and use of torture.
In his blurb for 9/11 and American Empire: Intellectuals Speak Out, edited by David Ray Griffin and Peter Dale Scott, McGovern wrote: “It has long been clear that the Bush-Cheney administration cynically exploited the attacks of 9/11 to promote its imperial designs. But the present… Continue reading
“I contend that should some civilian order you to initiate a nuclear attack

An Open Letter to the New Generation of Military Officers Serving and Protecting
By Dr. Robert M. Bowman, Lt. Col., USAF, ret., National Commander, The Patriots
Dear Comrades in Arms,
You are facing challenges in 2007 that we of previous generations never dreamed
of. I’m just an old fighter pilot (101 combat missions in Vietnam , F-4 Phantom,
Phu Cat, 1969-1970) who’s now a disabled veteran with terminal cancer from Agent
Orange. Our mailing list (over 22,000) includes veterans from all branches of
the service, all political parties, and all parts of the political spectrum.
We are Republicans and Democrats, Greens and Libertarians, Constitutionists
and Reformers, and a good many Independents. What unites us is our desire for
a government that (1) follows the Constitution, (2) honors the truth, and (3)
serves the people.
We see our government going down the wrong path, all too often ignoring military
advice, and heading us toward great danger. And we look to you who still serve
as the best hope for protecting our nation from disaster.
We see the current Iraq War as having been unnecessary, entered into under
false pretenses, and horribly mismanaged by… Continue reading

The anti-war movement has proven impotent to stop the war in Iraq despite the fact that the war was initiated on the basis of lies and deception. The anti-war movement stands helpless to prevent President Bush from attacking Iran or any other country that he might demonize for harboring a future 9/11 threat.
September 11 enabled Bush to take America to war and to keep America at war even though the government’s explanation of the events of September 11 is mired in controversy and disbelieved by a large percentage of the population.
Although the news media’s investigative arm has withered, other entities and individuals continue to struggle with unanswered questions. In the six years since 9/11, numerous distinguished scientists, engineers, architects, intelligence officers, pilots, military officers, air traffic controllers, and foreign dignitaries have raised serious and unanswered questions about the official story line.
Recognition of the inadequacy of the official account of the collapse of the twin towers is widespread in the scientific and technical community. One of the most glaring failures in the official account is the lack of an explanation of the near free-fall speed at which the buildings failed once the process began. Some scientists and engineers have attempted to bolster the official account with explanations of how this might happen in the absence of explosives used in controlled demolitions.
Issued by 9/11 Truth of Argentina, September 9, 2007:
Citizens of the world, the lies about the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon
and the Twin Towers (9/11/01) are falling apart: Dublin, Madrid, Buenos Aires,
Rome, Paris, United States.
On September 11th, those of us who struggle for the truth will be honoring the
victims, in Buenos Aires, Dublin, Santiago de Chile, Caracas, Madrid, Paris,
Rome, Brussels and several places of the United States. Six years ago, Bush
swore that the terrorist had been Bin Laden, and the whole world except for
few believed him. Today, few believe him.
Italian, Spanish, Argentine, French, German and many American organizations
and investigators are working for the truth, for there are as many lies as casualties.
University professor David Ray Griffin is calling for demonstrations all over
the world: Because of the attack, Americans have accepted anything.
"The attacks left Americans numb enough to accept anything; in the US,
this has meant severe restrictions to civil liberties. Abroad, we have had a
war against terror that has been a war of aggression against Muslims. This has
meant six years of torture, humiliation and death of hundreds of thousands of
people in Afghanistan and Iraq, people who were innocent civilians or soldiers
fighting against an immoral and even illegal occupation."
The cover-up by the media is worldwide
We have seen an unprecedented cover-up of the media in the US and allied countries
(also in Argentina). There had been cover-ups before. But in this case, the… Continue reading
If not now, when?
General Strike on 9/11/2007
We’ve endured seven years of cascading failures from 911 to Iraq enabled by rigged elections and supported by a decadent set of politicians who lack the will to even fight for themselves.
But let’s not lose hope. We’ll get a Democratic majority in Congress. They’ll do something! We’ll be out of trouble in no time. Plus, we’ll have the type of investigations we need to get the real solution in place — impeachment. It will be like a Roman triumph — the Truth enters the Capitol to the cheers of the people all across America.
We tried that. It failed.
Now it’s up to us, the people, who are ever so inconvenient to the rulers of this country. We, the citizens, are the last line of defense against the complete removal of any form of freedom and security that we now retain.
We’re the last line in a defense that to date has never truly formed. How can you have a strong defense if there’s no communication? The corporate media has done a sterling job of masking the very information that would have made the current insanity impossible.
Any hope of a rescue by those in power is gone. We must accept that.
Our leaders are simply placeholders for those whose madness drives events.
For example, the Senate passed an amendment in April which practically endorses an invasion of Iran. Did you hear about it? Was it discussed?… Continue reading
Even I question the ‘truth’ about 9/11
By Robert Fisk
Published: 25 August 2007
Each time I lecture abroad on the Middle East, there is always someone in the audience — just one — whom I call the “raver”. Apologies here to all the men and women who come to my talks with bright and pertinent questions — often quite humbling ones for me as a journalist — and which show that they understand the Middle East tragedy a lot better than the journalists who report it. But the “raver” is real. He has turned up in corporeal form in Stockholm and in Oxford, in Sao Paulo and in Yerevan, in Cairo, in Los Angeles and, in female form, in Barcelona. No matter the country, there will always be a “raver”.
Robert Fisk, award winning journalist, for the Independent in London; described by the NY Times as “the most famous foreign correspondent in Britain”; frequent contributor to Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now, a man so famous he has become a verb in his own lifetime, and he’s is a 9/11 truther!
In this article, Fisk complains about the ill-behaved 9/11 truthers who shout out questions about the 9/11 cover up at various speaking venues, but this complaint may be just to give himself some cover. Without that shield, he would be immediately denounced and marginalized, (he may be anyway) but he goes on to mention the dirth of plane parts at the Pentagon,… Continue reading
