There are many questions to ask about the war in Afghanistan. One that has been widely asked is whether it will turn out to be “Obama’s Vietnam.”1 This question implies another: Is this war winnable, or is it destined to be a quagmire, like Vietnam? These questions are motivated in part by the widespread agreement that the Afghan government, under Hamid Karzai, is at least as corrupt and incompetent as the government the United States tried to prop up in South Vietnam for 20 years.
Although there are many similarities between these two wars, there is also a big difference: This time, there is no draft. If there were a draft, so that college students and their friends back home were being sent to Afghanistan, there would be huge demonstrations against this war on campuses all across this country. If the sons and daughters of wealthy and middle-class parents were coming home in boxes, or with permanent injuries or post-traumatic stress syndrome, this war would have surely been stopped long ago. People have often asked: Did we learn any of the “lessons of Vietnam”? The US government learned one: If you’re going to fight unpopular wars, don’t have a draft — hire mercenaries!
There are many other questions that have been, and should be, asked about this war, but in this essay, I focus on only one: Did the 9/11 attacks justify the war in Afghanistan?… Continue reading

“There is nothing so strong or safe in an emergency of life as the simple truth.”

We face what appears to be a military industrial media empire so powerful and complex that truth is mostly absent or reported in disconnected segments with little historical context. A case in point: The London Times reported on June 5, 2010, that American troops are now operating in 75 countries. Has President Obama secretly sanctioned a huge increase in the number of US Special Forces carrying out search-and-destroy missions against al-Qaeda around the world? If so, this increase is far in excess of special-forces operations under the Bush administration and reflects how aggressively Obama is pursuing al-Qaeda behind his public rhetoric of global engagement and diplomacy. Somehow this information didn’t make it into the US media.
The US, in cooperation with NATO, is building global occupation forces for the control of international resources in support of Trilateralist–US, Europe, Japan–corporate profits. A New York Times report on the availability of a trillion dollars in mineral wealth in Afghanistan, on top of the need for an oil/gas pipeline from the Caspian Sea, suggests other reasons for U.S objectives in the region.
Jim Lobe of Inter Press Service writes on June 15, 2010, “The timing of the publication of a major New York Times story on the vast untapped mineral wealth that lies beneath Afghanistan’s soil is raising major questions about the intent of the Pentagon … Blake Hounshell, managing editor at Foreign Policy magazine, says that the US Geological Service (USGS) already published a comprehensive inventory of Afghanistan’s non-oil mineral resources on the Internet in 2007, as did the British Geological Survey.…Continue reading

DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON – The House votes Wednesday or Thursday for the first time ever on a bill to care for the heroes and victims of Sept. 11, 2001 – and it’s likely to fail.
That’s because Democratic House leaders decided Tuesday to push ahead with the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act under a rule that requires two-thirds approval to pass.
Many Republicans are concerned about the $10.5 billion price tag, and many don’t like the way it’s paid for.
News of the scheme immediately alarmed 9/11 responders.
“Whoever votes ‘No’ tomorrow should go to jail for manslaughter,” said John Feal, who lost half his foot at Ground Zero in the cleanup.
Feal thinks House leaders should have found a way to move the bill in the regular way, needing just a simple majority.
“They’ll all go home and lick their wounds after the vote, but 9/11 responders are the ones who are going to suffer without health care after nine years,” Feal said.
Sources told the Daily News that Democrats feared Republicans would attach toxic changes in a simple majority vote. No such tinkering is allowed under the two-thirds rule.
New York’s legislators were still holding out hope they would prevail.
“Every time we had a vote on this, we did much better than people thought,” said Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn/Queens).
And Republicans who oppose the bill can be cast in a politically poisonous light, Democrats said, noting the… Continue reading

On September 10, 2001, Donald Rumsfeld announced that an estimated $2.3 Trillion in Pentagon spending was missing — and unaccounted for — from the Pentagon. One day later, on 9/11, the story also disappeared, along with any semblances of governmental accountability and journalistic integrity.
In the wake of 9/11 America was a traumatized nation where asking difficult questions was often perceived as unpatriotic and equated with disloyalty.
Forget the fact that $2.3 Trillion equals the GDP of Italy. Forget that the military only spent an estimated $311 billion in the year 2000 – and that approximately 7.5 times that amount had disappeared. We were at war the very next day on 9/11 — and that was all that mattered. Forget that Italy had just disappeared from the map.
That was the power of 9/11.
And in the years that followed it appeared that no lie was too big, no claim too outrageous, no initiative too insane, to trigger an appropriate response from either the media or the public. Accountability was replaced with blind nationalism and comforting platitudes.
“United We Stand.”
“We Will Never Forget.”
Sadly, nine years after 9/11, we neither stand united nor care enough to remember.
Nine years after 9/11 our 9/11 first responders are still denied the critical medical care they need — in plain sight — with nary a peep from a war-weary populace still sporting their fading 9/11 “We Will Never Forget” car magnets on their SUVs.
And nine years after 9/11… Continue reading
Sydney’s Sept 11 Protest Calls for End of Afghan War!
So why should we believe that “9/11 Truth” can stop the war in Afghanistan and bring the “War on Terrorism” to an end?
I will lay out below the non-conspiratorial reasons why it is vitally important that we continue to demand accountability from our governments, on why it is they went to war on our behalf in 2001. I will also argue why I am correct to strongly assert that the pursuit of 9/11 truth and a criminal investigation of those events is the only practical path to peace today. Details of an upcoming Sydney “9/11 Truth for Peace” Protest on September 11th, 2010 are at the bottom of this article.
On the 11th of September 2001 the world entered a very dark chapter of its history! We were promised a 100 years of war in this “New American Century” fighting “the terrorists” wherever the American Empire deemed they were, and at the time of their choosing. We were told that this “New Pear Harbor” event carried out on 9/11 by the CIA born Al-Qaeda was a fair and reasonable reason to carry out a preemptive strike against their supporters the Taliban, by the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan.
The vast majority of the world’s population and its governments rallied behind the US determined to fight Islamic terrorism together world wide. Although some more skeptical… Continue reading
9/11 Working Group sponsors Sept. 4 discussion at Buskirk-Chumley
by Kevin Ryan
August 19, 2010
Published in the Bloomington Alternative
Most people recognize that the events of 9/11 were the driving force behind the “War on Terror.” Less well recognized is the fact that this borderless war against an ill-defined enemy has expedited economic collapse, driven totalitarian legislation and generated a great deal of animosity against the United States throughout the world. The pain and suffering caused by 9/11 comes with an opportunity, however. Through a better understanding of those tragic events, we can achieve crucial insights that can not only end the wars but might ultimately lead to lasting positive change in human society.
On Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. in the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre in Bloomington, the 9/11 Working Group of Bloomington will sponsor a free presentation by two prominent truth and peace activists. Buddhist scholar and peace studies director Graeme MacQueen will discuss “The fictional basis for the war on terror.” Behavioral scientist Laurie Manwell will speak on the social and psychological implications of 9/11 and other state crimes against democracy.
It’s difficult for Americans to admit when we are wrong. This is partly because being right or wrong on most issues has not been as important for people today as it was for our ancestors. For many years now, due to the exponential growth of our economy, we have led relatively easy lives in which having wrong or superfluous views have had little impact on whether or… Continue reading
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 10, 2010
On the eve of the 9th anniversary of 9/11, support for the war in Afghanistan took a serious blow yesterday. Simultaneous press conferences were held in New York and Los Angeles to present startling new information refuting the official 9/11 narrative, used to justify the war. Also announced were three major professional groups which have joined the worldwide, and ever-growing, “9/11 Truth Movement”.
In a striking show of unity, representatives of “Scientists for 9/11 Truth”, “U.S. Military Officers for 9/11 Truth” and “Actors & Artists for 9/11 Truth” presented their findings and unveiled their eye-opening websites. Each non-profit group has launched a petition calling for a new, transparent investigation.
In NY, representing “Scientists”, Professor Niels Harrit said, “The official account put forth by NIST violates the fundamental laws of physics and chemistry.” Harrit is Prof. Emeritus at the University of Copenhagen and was lead author for a 2009 peer-reviewed study that revealed evidence of high tech explosives throughout the WTC dust.
In LA, physics teacher David Chandler discussed the swift destruction of the WTC towers, including Building 7, the little-known third tower. Having demonstrated its free fall, he confronted the US government agency NIST with his analyses and forced NIST to revise its November 2008 Final Report on WTC 7. NIST’s Draft Report had claimed free fall was impossible but NIST ultimately acknowledged WTC 7 was in absolute free fall for over two seconds. Concluded Chandler, “Free fall is physically impossible without explosives”.

A review of David Ray Griffin’s new book, Cognitive Infiltration:
an Obama Appointee’s Plan to Undermine the 9/11 Conspiracy Theory
By Tod Fletcher
Posted September 15, 2010
Shortly after taking office on January 20, 2009 President Obama appointed Harvard
law professor (and personal friend) Cass Sunstein to the post of administrator
of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs. In June 2009
Sunstein published an essay in The Journal of Political Philosophy entitled
“Conspiracy Theories: Causes and Cures,” in which he provided an “analysis”
of conspiracy theories, viewing them, as his title indicated, as “caused”
by “informational isolation” and requiring “cures”, i.e.,
elimination. The article led to an outcry by civil libertarians of all political
stripes, who especially singled out for protest Sunstein’s call for covert “cognitive
infiltration” by government agents of organizations the government deems
Because Sunstein explicitly states that “9/11 conspiracy theories”
are his main focus, virtually all interpreters have agreed that Sunstein’s call
for what is essentially another Cointelpro Operation is directed specifically
against the 9/11 truth movement. (Cointelpro, or “Counter Intelligence
Program”, was the FBI’s name for its high-priority operations to infiltrate,
provoke, undermine and disable civil rights, socialist, antiwar, black power
and Native American movements during the late 1950s and the 1960s.) The fantastic
picture Sunstein paints of the 9/11 truth movement as “harmful,” “dangerous,”
and likely to resort to “terrorism” suggests that he is serving a
function similar to Philip Zelikow’s during the Bush/Cheney years; in his own
way, Sunstein… Continue reading

Publishers know that controversy fuels book sales. Apparently, so does burning them.
The Pentagon has only helped build buzz around “Operation Dark Heart,” a firsthand account of special operations in Afghanistan, by burning 9,500 copies — nearly all the first run. (Some review copies, released before publication, have filtered out and sold for more than $2,000 on eBay, according to Time magazine.)
Destroying books isn’t an everyday occurrence. In fact, the Pentagon says it has never destroyed copies of a book before. But in this case, the Pentagon contends that Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer’s work includes classified information that shouldn’t have been published and therefore it was the only option.
On Sept. 24, four days after the burning, publisher St. Martin’s Press printed 50,000 copies of the book with supposedly classified information now blacked out. Even with redactions, the second run — five times larger than the first — is selling well. Time magazine noted that “Operation Dark Heart” hit No. 1 on Amazon’s biography list and No. 2 on Barnes & Noble’s political list.
The Pentagon may have succeeded in keeping thousands of unredacted copies from hitting the shelves, but it cannot be certain that the book’s contents won’t ever reach readers. In the digital age, it’s nearly impossible to completely destroy anything. WikiLeaks, the secretive whistleblower site, called the Pentagon “Nazi punks” for burning the books and has already threatened to post an unredacted copy on the Internet.… Continue reading

A document obtained and witnesses interviewed by Fox News raise new questions over whether there was an effort by the Defense Department to cover up a pre-9/11 military intelligence program known as “Able Danger.”
At least five witnesses questioned by the Defense Department’s Inspector General told Fox News that their statements were distorted by investigators in the final IG’s report — or it left out key information, backing up assertions that lead hijacker Mohammed Atta was identified a year before 9/11.
Atta is believed to have been the ringleader of the Sept. 11 hijackers who piloted American Airlines Flight 11 into the World Trade Center. Claims about how early Atta first tripped the radar of the Department of Defense date back to 2005, but those claims never made it into the Inspector General’s report. The report was completed in 2006 and, until now, has been available only in a version with the names of virtually all of the witnesses blacked out.
Fox News, as part of an ongoing investigation, exclusively obtained a clean copy of the report and spoke to several principal witnesses, including an intelligence and data collector who asked that she not be named.
The witness told Fox News she was interviewed twice by a Defense Department investigator. She said she told the investigator that it was highly likely a department database included the picture of Atta, whom she knew under an alias, Mohammed el-Sayed.
The Defense Intelligence Agency has blocked a book about the tipping point in Afghanistan and a controversial pre-9/11 data mining project called “Able Danger.”
“When it came to the picture, (the investigator) he was fairly hostile,” the witness told Fox News.…Continue reading

“Do you think Kevin Bracken’s comments were reasonable?”]
UPDATE 7.51pm: JULIA Gillard has dismissed as “stupid and
wrong” a senior union official’s belief that the 9/11 attacks were a conspiracy
but has refused to discipline him.
Audio: Listen to Kevin Bracken on Jon Faine
Faine described the claim as a “nutter theory”.
The Federal Opposition seized on the comments in Parliament today, with Victorian
MP Josh Frydenberg asking Ms Gillard what action she would take against Mr Bracken
“to send a message that such remarks are unacceptable”, The Australian
“Obviously I don’t agree with the remarks, obviously they are stupid
and wrong,” Ms Gillard said.
“The Labor Party is a large organisation, people join it as individuals
— we don’t dictate what people think.”
After being accused by Liberal frontbencher Christopher Pyne of not answering
the question on discipline, Ms Gillard said: “If it is the intention of
the Leader of the Opposition to expel every member who says something stupid,
I’ll start sending him a weekly list.”
In Victoria, Shadow Attorney General Robert Clarke said Mr Bracken’s comments
were a direct insult to Australian soldiers serving in Afghanistan.…

To many, the name Kevin Bracken is a new one as regards 9/11 Truth. The reality
is that Kevin has been a champion of the 9/11 Truth cause since 2006 by disseminating
information throughout the Victorian Union Movement and the Maritime Workers
Union of Australia. He has distributed DVD’s, shown films and shared information
regularly with his associates and the people of Melbourne and he achieved motions
calling for a new investigation from both the Victorian Trades Hall Council
where he is the President and the Victorian branch of the Maritime Union of
Australia of which he heads as Secretary. Kevin has also attended numerous conferences
on 9/11 and has been the facilitator of such in Melbourne, Australia. Over the
years Kevin and I have developed a close working relationship, both striving
for the truth 9/11 to come out to bring end to the wars and to get our rights
back that have been eroded since 9/11!
This is the motion passed on the 28th of March of 2008 at the VTHC:

The events of that day have been used to start pre-emptive wars “that

and legal principles that have been the cornerstone of civilized communities.
There is an urgent need to reassess the way we view the world after September

At the 2010 Anarchist Bookfair in London there was a discussion with independent journalist and filmmaker John Pilger (which was recorded — listen below) and one of the questions from the audience was about the attacks on 9/11. The following is a transcript of the question and his reply:
Audience Question: “I would like to ask your views or theory that the US government was complicit in or even perpetrated the attacks on 9/11 to gain support for criminal [inaudible] Afghanistan and Iraq?”
John Pilger: “I think there is a lot of evidence that certain elements in the Bush administration, whether by intent or by or by their own arrogant incompetence, I don’t know, let things happen. I think there is enough evidence to …
We know the senior FBI people who gave warnings right throughout 2001. We know about the extraordinary inactivity by the NORAD aircraft on the day of September 11th. We know that Cheney was in charge of the White House on that day.
I think the most plausible is the “let it happen”, now at what stage it was let happen, I don’t know, I don’t know. But certainly that seems to me, the most plausible.
There is no doubt that 9/11 became the opportunity for a new “Cold War” basically, only called the “War on Terror”. But beyond that I wouldn’t want to … “

In a recent interview with Iran’s Press TV, leading American intellectual and political dissident Noam Chomsky stated that the wars launched in response to the 9/11 attacks are “criminal” and noted that no evidence was provided that al Qaeda was responsible for the attacks.
Chomsky told Press TV: “The explicit and declared motive of the [Afghanistan] war was to compel the Taliban to turn over to the United States, the people who they accused of having been involved in World Trade Center and Pentagon terrorist acts. The Taliban… they requested evidence… and the Bush administration refused to provide any. We later discovered one of the reasons why they did not bring evidence: they did not have any.”
In the years since 9/11, Chomsky has often been at odds with activists seeking accountability for the attacks, which have been used as justification for an ongoing global “war on terror” and continuing infringement of civil liberties. Chomsky has at times derided the cause and accused 9/11 activists of distracting from more important issues. In 2008, Chomsky added his name to a petition started by 9/11 family members calling for the release of classified documents relating to the 9/11 attacks.

The Post-9/11 World Is A Detriment To Humanity
* We are fighting illegal preemptive wars against three countries. Afghanistan,
Iraq, and Pakistan. The resulting wars have caused well over 1,000,000 casualties.
Preemptive war is illegal according to the Nuremberg Charter, and the United
Nations charter. These wars are destabilizing the entire Middle East, and causing
anti-American sentiment throughout the world.
* In America, the Constitution is being forgotten with the passage of bills
like the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act, and the John Warner National
Defense Authorization Act. Americans are forced to wonder if their conversations
are being monitored through the use of illegal wiretapping. The freedom of the
press, and the right to peacefully assemble is being discarded.
* Hatred towards Muslims and Jews is being fueled.
* Executive Power within the United States is being expanded to the point of
near-dictatorship, and accountability for the actions of the Executive, and
other members of Government is non-existent.
* A constant state of fear is the norm.
* Billions upon billions are being spent on the previously mentioned wars,
and things that are needed for the people are being forgotten about.
* Soldiers are dying, are being subjected to multiple tours of duty, are being
exposed to depleted uranium and chemical weapons, are suffering from post traumatic
stress disorder, are committing suicide at an astounding rate, are being fed
propaganda in order to murder innocents, and are having… Continue reading

PAUL JAY, SENIOR EDITOR, TRNN: Welcome back to The Real News Network. And it’s the first perhaps annual Real News Webathon. We’re heading towards our $200,000 target by the end of December 9, where I think we’re getting upwards of $165,000 now, with another tonight and tomorrow night to go. So we’re doing very well, and I want to thank everybody so far for donating. And if you like what The Real News is doing, please give us a little tap on the donate button here, or you can call 888-449-6772, or you can also email us at contact (at) therealnews (dot) com if you’re having any other trouble. But the best thing is just to hit the donate button. The $200,000, I’ve explained before, covers just barely four months of the work that we’re doing now at the level we’re doing now, but we really want to expand in 2011. We need producers that specialize in certain areas. And one of the areas we want to specialize is the military-industrial complex. We’d like to have a producer who does nothing but cover stories about the sort of underpinnings of US foreign policy and the real issues that don’t get discussed very much in terms of what’s driving much of global politics, and even, as I–in the current WikiLeaks there’s a layer of truth, one could say, that is not really revealed in these WikiLeaks, because they’re not top secret, as we’ve… Continue reading
