History Commons Projects, Update on April 2, 2008
Significant new material was added to three projects this week: 9/11, Loss of Civil Liberties, and Watergate.
The entries added to the 9/11 Timeline range from the 9/11 Commission and attempts to get it to come down in favor of an Iraq-al-Qaeda link, an al-Qaeda cell in Italy that was closely monitored by the authorities, and the 9/11 hijackers, who were profiled as high-risk potential banking clients due to their terrorism links. There is also more on BCCI, terrorism finance in general, and two CIA employees — bin Laden unit chief Rich B and contractor Billy Waugh. In addition, there is a new category dealing with internal US security after 9/11.
The Loss of Civil Liberties Timeline takes a look at the recent passport file breaches of presidential candidates, as well as the Protect America and Military Commissions Acts, and constitutional amphibian Dick Cheney.
There are a lot more entries in the Watergate Timeline covering the Committee to Re-elect the President, the Plumbers, and Nixon suggesting the IRS retaliate against Jews who donate money to the Democratic Party.
The Decision to Invade Iraq Timeline has more about the invasion being a project to enhance US dominance of the world.
Finally, the A. Q. Khan Timeline points out that Jimmy Carter gave Pakistan’s nuclear program the ‘green light.’
The History Commons’ fundraising goal has still not been met and any donations will be gratefully received.…Continue reading

The US Congress, the US media, the American people, and the United Nations, are looking the other way as Cheney prepares his attack on Iran.
If only America had an independent media and an opposition party. If there were a shred of integrity left in American political life, perhaps a third act of naked aggression–a third war crime under the Nuremberg standard–by the Bush Regime could be prevented.
On March 30, the Russian News & Information Agency, Novosti, cited “a high-ranking security source: “The latest military intelligence data point to heightened US military preparations for both an air and ground operation against Iran.”
According to Novosti, Russian Colonel General Leonid Ivashov said “that the Pentagon is planning to deliver a massive air strike on Iran’s military infrastructure in the near future.”
The chief of Russia’s general staff, Yuri Baluyevsky, said last November that Russia was beefing up its military in response to US aggression, but that the Russian military is not “obliged to defend the world from the evil Americans.”
On March 29, OpEdNews cited a report by the Saudi Arabian newspaper Okaz, which was picked up by the German news service, DPA. The Saudi newspaper reported on March 22, the day following Cheney’s visit with the kingdom’s rulers, that the Saudi Shura Council is preparing “national plans to deal with any sudden nuclear and radioactive hazards that may affect the kingdom following experts’ warnings of possible attacks on Iran’s Bushehr nuclear reactors.”… Continue reading
Japanese MP Yukihisa Fujita of the Democratic Party of Japan, a member of the House of Councillors in the Diet of Japan
VIDEO: Japanese MP Yukihisa Fujita Speaks at 9/11 Truth Conference in Sydney (27 Mins)
Japanese MP Yukihisa Fujita of the Democratic Party of Japan, a member of the House of Councillors in the Diet of Japan (national legislature), spoke at the 9/11 Truth conference in Sydney today.
Mr Fujita is the single most important person to step forward to ask hard questions about 9/11 and the “War on Terror” this year.
Although the international conference is taking place in the centre of Sydney a stone’s throw away from Sydney parliamentarians, not a single Australian MP is in attendance at this important event.
Organizers of the conference had hoped that his attendance may encourage Australian Parliamentarians to examine the provably false official 9/11 conspiracy theory. He will be in attendance on the 15th (Sat) and 16th (Sun) and will make a short address on both days.
Australian media also failed to show up to the conference, despite excellent facilities and the importance of this event to Australians who are embroiled in Afghanistan and Iraq and currently conducting “cyber war games” with the Americans.
Hundreds of Australian citizens and international visitors are gathering over the weekend for the conference which is open to all and taking place at the prestigious Tattersall Club at 181 Elizabeth Street in Central Sydney, having been opened by a traditional Australian indigenous welcome speech… Continue reading
Take Action and save the life of Dr. Sami Al-Arian!
Save a life! Palestinian activist Dr. Sami Al-Arian was acquitted in 2005
of bogus "terrorism" charges by a Tampa Bay jury, yet he still remains
imprisoned in the United States.
Dr. Sami Al-Arian is currently on the fifteenth day of a no food or water hunger
strike to protest the legal manipulations and harassment by the Bush Administration
that are keeping him behind bars despite his acquittal by jury and subsequent
plea bargain (signed under significant pressure from the U.S. government) that
promised his release in May of 2006.
Dr. Al-Arian, a diabetic, is already losing his eyesight and is in extraordinary
danger of renal failure. The federal medical facility where he has been moved
to in Bunter, North Carolina has not given him an IV, despite their legal obligation
to keep him alive. The situation is urgent! Please write immediately to your
elected officials and the federal medical facility to protest this legal harassment
and torture and to demand his release. Dr. Al-Arian’s life depends on it.

On March 19, 2008 – the fifth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq – Direct
Action to Stop the War (http://www.actagainstwar.net/)
will be organizing a day of decentralized, multiple-target direct action against
government offices and war profiteers in downtown San Francisco. We have created
a list (see the website) of San Francisco offices of federal agencies, corporations
with military contracts or contracts in Iraq, politicians who have failed to
stop the war, and foreign embassies of countries linked to the war in Iraq.
We are focusing primarily on corporations with military or Iraqi contracts,
because we want to focus attention on the prominent role played by war-profiteering
corporations in the U.S. occupation of Iraq. We will take direct action on March
19th against as many of these locations as possible, in order to send a clear
message to the economic and political elites that control this country: No business
as usual until all U.S. troops are withdrawn from Iraq!
**How you can plug into the March 19th San Francisco Day of Direct Action:**
We?re asking that you:
On March 19, 2008, we will set up a nonviolent blockade of the national Internal
Revenue Service headquarters in Washington, DC, as part of the day of actions
against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Just as military recruiters supply the bodies for the war, the IRS supplies
the funding. Just as some soldiers have the courage to resist the war, we —
as tax payers — should have the courage to resist paying the taxes that
send soldiers to war. We call on all war opponents to help dramatize our opposition
and to disrupt business as usual by joining this nonviolent blockade.
For at least this one day — March 19, 2008 — we need to create
a disturbance in the smug complacency of the IRS/Pentagon money-axis.
We will gather in our affinity groups at 7 am on Wednesday morning, March 19,
at McPherson Sq., 15th & K Sts. NW. From these areas we will march —
with the Rude Mechanical Orchestra — to the IRS main entrance at 1111
Constitution Ave. (at 12th Street), NW, and across from the Smithsonian’s
Museum of Natural History. Once at the entrance, some of us will sit down to
prevent the IRS from opening as usual, while others will hold signs and banners,
pass out flyers, talk with passersby, and generally call attention to the cost
of the war and our collective responsibility to stop funding it.
In 1971, a courageous group of veterans exposed the criminal nature of the Vietnam War in an event called Winter Soldier. This weekend, members of Iraq Veterans Against the War will give first-person accounts of what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground. The event will bring together veterans from across the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan – and present video and photographic evidence of war crimes they have witnessed. In addition, there will be panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and other specialists to give context to the testimony. These panels will cover everything from the history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for veterans’ health benefits and support.

The call of duty has brought them together again, for one more vital mission.
Their hair is a little longer, their faces are a little scruffier and their military garbs are a little more disheveled.
But when the signal is given shortly before 10 a.m. today at the Constitution Center, 20 members of the Philadelphia chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War will march once more.
They’ll trek along Kelly Drive, past the Art Museum and Boathouse Row, across the Strawberry Mansion Bridge and continue out west until they meet about 90 other veterans at Valley Forge on Sunday afternoon.
Along the way, they hope to dispel a few myths about the Iraq war and give regular people an idea of the grim reality that their fellow soldiers still face overseas.
“We wanted to do something in solidarity that could send a message to the American people,” said Steve Mortillo, the president of the Philadelphia chapter of IVAW, who served in Iraq with the U.S. Calvary 1st Squadron Infantry Division.
“It’s been five years since the war started, and a lot of us have feelings that Americans only should die in combat if it’s a cause that’s going to save more American lives than it’s going to cost.”
Today’s march also will promote IVAW’s Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan, a three-day gathering for veterans of both wars that will take place next month in Washington, D.C.

From March 13-16th, U.S. veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan will testify to what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground in these occupations. To provide a preview, we’ve created this short film. The film features three members who will be testifying at Winter Soldier and includes videos and photographs of Iraq from their deployments. This video contains graphic content. We need your support to help make Winter Soldier a success. Find out more about Winter Soldier.
All week, you can watch proceedings of the Winter Soldier hearings live at the IVAW site or on satellite television, or listen live on Internet radio (KPFA Rocks!!)–details here.

This week, on March 13-16, a new generation of “Winter Soldiers” — veterans of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq — will descend on the nation’s capitol to tell America in their own words what they saw during their service in the “war on terror,” the Bush administration’s signature policy. They’ll give a ground’s eye perspective on the occupation’s toll on the people of those countries and the costs to the military, and they’ll tell stories of what it was really like in places like Fallujah and Ramadi — places that are just names on a map to most of the people back home.
They’ll be following large footsteps. In the early months of 1971, a group of Vietnam vets, organized by Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW), gave two days of testimony about the Vietnam that they had seen, up close and all-too-personally, in the original “Winter Soldier” investigation. While largely dismissed by the political establishment, their wrenching testimony redoubled the peace movement’s efforts to end that war.
In his opening statement 37 years ago, William Crandell, a 26 year-old lieutenant who served in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division — the division that committed the infamous My Lai Massacre — told the hushed room, “The Winter Soldier Investigation is not a mock trial. There will be no phony indictments; there will be no verdict against Uncle Sam.” He promised “straightforward testimony — direct testimony — about acts which are war… Continue reading
It is with great pleasure that we can announce that Mr. Yukihisa Fujita, a Member of the Japanese Parliament representing the Democratic Party, is to attend the Sydney Truth Now Conference. He is, in the organizing committee’s opinion, the single most important person to step forward to ask the hard questions about 9/11 and the “War on Terror” this year. We hope that his attendance may encourage Australian Parliamentarians to examine the provably false official 9/11 conspiracy theory! He will be in attendance on the 15th (Sat) and 16th (Sun) only and will make a short address on both days.
In other news:
It is with great sadness that I must finally announce that Dr Steven Jones will not be attending this year’s conference due to a family illness, but I’m glad to report he is already preparing for next year! I have taken great pleasure in talking many times with Dr Jones over the last few months and have had the great privilege of his advice! I am now coming to realize, especially during recent months, that many of us will never achieve our goals without the support of the ones that love us most, our families. Dr Jones has made a choice to care for the foundations of what has made him such a noble and courageous man! We the Sydney Committee applaud that decision!
He will still be providing a short video presentation to the conference and between locals Dr Frank Legge (who has been working closely with Dr Jones) and Dr David Leifer of the Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth, all Dr Jones’s material will be covered at the Sydney Conference.…Continue reading
Lawyers claim he pleaded guilty without seeing secret evidence
By MATT APUZZO
February 26, 2008
WASHINGTON — Lawyers urged Zacarias Moussaoui not to plead guilty to terrorism charges. They just couldn’t tell him why.
In newly filed court documents, Moussaoui argues that court-imposed secrecy undermined his ability to present an adequate defense. His new lawyers say Moussaoui’s guilty plea should be thrown out and a new trial should be convened for the man who once claimed to have been a part of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist plot.
Moussaoui was not allowed to see the classified evidence against him and was shut out from closed-door hearings in which that evidence was laid out.
Defense lawyers say they were barred from even discussing with Moussaoui evidence that could help prove his innocence. They say Moussaoui faced an unconstitutional choice: plead guilty or go to trial without knowing the evidence.
“Moussaoui appeals because his plea was unknowing, uncounselled and invalid,” attorneys Justin Antonipillai and Barbara Hartung wrote.
The documents, filed with the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., raise a fundamental question about whether terrorism suspects like Moussaoui should be given access to all the evidence against them — access that is normally guaranteed in criminal cases.
The Bush administration has sought to avoid such conflicts by keeping most terrorism cases out of civilian courts. Instead, officials plan to try several cases before special military commissions at the Guantánamo Bay naval base, where judges have broad authority… Continue reading
BRUSSELS, European Parliament, 26th February 2008.
Mark Dermul (www.911belgium) reporting.
On Tuesday 26th February, Europarliamentarian Guilietto Chiesa invited his colleagues and the press to attend the screening and debate of the Italian-produced documentary named ‘ZERO, an investigation into the events of 9/11′. Object of the screening was to create political awareness of the faulty official investigation into the events by the 9/11 Commission.
Besides Mr Chiesa, the panel consisted of Japanese parliamentarian Fujita, Dr David Ray Griffin, film distributor Tim Sparke & the director and producers of the film.
After his opening statements, Mr Chiesa welcomed his guest speakers. Then he pointed out that he was unable to find any distributor in his native country of Italy and was happy to find a company in the UK, led by Mr Tim Sparke, to handle worldwide distribution of this important film. ‘It is important to realize,’ he emphasized ‘that the movie was made thanks to contribution and donations of hundreds of citizens who feel a new investigation is more than warranted.’ No less than 450 people worked on this documentary on a voluntary basis. They never received any kind of payment. Their reward is the movie itself, which they feel is an instrument to create awareness and a means to provoke a political debate in Europe.
Since the movie projector didn’t work, Mr Chiesa invited the public to ask questions until the technical problems were solved and we could start watching the movie.

Guantánamo BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba (Reuters) – Military lawyers defending
Osama bin Laden’s former driver on terrorism charges in the U.S. war court at
Guantánamo Bay have offered a compromise in their quest to interview September
11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
They promised not to ask Mohammed about his treatment in U.S. custody or about
the CIA’s admission that it subjected him to a simulated drowning technique
known as "waterboarding" during interrogations.
Bin Laden’s former driver, Salim Ahmed Hamdan, was captured in Afghanistan
in November 2001 and faces life in prison if convicted in the Guantánamo court
of conspiring with al Qaeda and providing material support for terrorism.
The Yemeni man said he never joined al Qaeda, had no advance knowledge of its
attacks and became bin Laden’s driver in Afghanistan because he needed the salary
of $200 per month.
Hamdan’s lawyers said Mohammed — the highest-ranking al Qaeda leader held
at the U.S. naval base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba — can help their defense by
telling them what role, if any, Hamdan had in the organization.
They likened it to somebody "on trial for organized crime and you’ve got
the opportunity to bring in the godfather."
The request was still pending when a pretrial hearing ended on Thursday but
the military judge suggested he might at least let the lawyers question Mohammed
via written notes.
The judge is expected to rule in the next couple of weeks and Hamdan… Continue reading

“So, what you wanna do?” the friend asked. “A target?” the wanna-be jihadi replied. “I want some type of city-hall-type stuff, federal courthouses.”
It was late November 2006, and twenty-two-year-old Derrick Shareef and his friend Jameel were hanging out in Rockford, Illinois, dreaming about staging a terrorist attack on America. The two men weren’t sure what kind of assault they could pull off. All Shareef knew was that he wanted to cause major damage, to wreak vengeance on the country he held responsible for oppressing Muslims worldwide. “Smoke a judge,” Shareef said. Maybe firebomb a government building.
But while Shareef harbored violent fantasies, he was hardly a serious threat as a jihadi. An American-born convert to Islam, he had no military training and no weapons. He had less than $100 in the bank. He worked in a dead-end job as a clerk in a video-game store. He didn’t own a car. So dire were his circumstances, Shareef had no place to live. Then one day, Jameel, a fellow Muslim, had shown up at EB… Continue reading

Official Account of 9/11: “Flawed”, “Absurd”, “Totally Inadequate”, “a Cover-up”
January 5, 2008 — Eight U.S. State Department veterans have severely criticized the official account of 9/11 and called for a new investigation. “There is no question in my mind, that there is enough evidence to justify a very comprehensive and hard hitting investigation of the kind we have not seen, with subpoenas, general questioning of people, releasing a lot of documents,” said Daniel Ellsberg, PhD, in a 2006 interview with Jack Blood.
Daniel Ellsberg, Phd is one of many signers of a petition to reinvestigate 9/11. Best known for leaking the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times in 1971, Dr. Ellsberg is a former U.S. State Department envoy to Viet Nam and Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense.
Another State Department critic of the official account of 9/11 is Col. Ann Wright, who said in a 2007 interview with Richard Greene on the Air America Radio Network, “It’s incredible some of these things that still are unanswered. The 9/11 Report — that was totally inadequate. I mean the questions that anybody has after reading that.”
Col. Ann Wright is one of three U.S. State Department officials to publicly resign in direct protest of the invasion of Iraq in March, 2003. She joined the Foreign Service in 1987 and served for 16 years as a U.S. Diplomat, including assignments as Deputy Chief of Mission of U.S. Embassies in Sierra Leone, Micronesia… Continue reading
