This is a memoir of sorts, the kind that many of us in America are telling
days after the election of Barack Obama, who is soon, we all hope soon enough,
to be the 44th president of the United States of America. We’re not used to
this of late, this being the emergence of our stories, our narratives, each
one jubilant, provoked to the page and the air waves by our tears, for many
of us our tears of joy and relief, tears of disbelief. We, many of us, have
awakened from a nightmare. And that nightmare, for each of us, is different.
For me, the nightmare only partly ends. I’ve told this story many times before.
On 9/11/2001, in many ways the counter narrative to 11/4/2008, I lost my daughter
– my baby girl and my first child – along with the broken promise of a first
grandchild as Vanessa ran from the falling towers of the World Trade Center.
For many who have read my essays written in the years following the attacks,
this is an old story. I’ve said many times in many different… Continue reading
Festival is serious about Poland’s booming cinema
November 9, 2008
By Bill Stamets
Of the city’s festivals with a national focus, the Polish Film Festival in
America might be the most serious about cinema. Just look at the credits for
the 76 features, documentaries and shorts in this year’s online schedule. For
the cinephile, this 20-year-old event not only lists the director of each film,
but also names the screenwriter, cinematographer, editor, art director and composer.
“The Polish film industry is blossoming right now,” says Christopher
Kamyszew, the festival’s founder and honorary chairman. “More films
are being produced and more have the ambition to do well in the local movie
theater in Poland.” That translates into more comedies. Kamyszew is
bringing over “Lejdis,” Poland’s hit comedy of the year.

Monday’s New York Times reported that former Deputy A.G. and 9/11
Commissioner Jamie Gorelick was a candidate for Attorney General in the new
Obama Administration. Five-time Emmy winning investigative reporter Peter Lance
details a shocking, but little known story about Gorelick involving the loss
of a key al Qaeda operative. This is an excerpt from his 2006 HarperCollins
book TRIPLE CROSS soon to be published in trade paperback.
On December 16th, 1994, agents in the FBI’s San Francisco office made
an extraordinary seizure. Mohammed Jamal Khalifa (MJK) Osama bin Laden’s
brother-in-law and former roommate, was captured at a Holiday Inn in Morgan
Hill, California. If this arrest had been fully investigated by the FBI and
the Justice Department, it might have led to the seizure of 9/11 “mastermind”
Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, and stopped “planes as missiles” plot dead
in its tracks. But what followed was series of missteps and bad decisions at
the highest levels of the State and Justice departments that had a catastrophic
impact on America’s ability to cut short bin Laden’s jihad against

Even if the Feds were savvy enough to see the value in questioning him, however,
they never got the chance. On January 5, 1995, a decision was made by Secretary

Privacy Advocates Expect Whistleblowers to Share Warrantless Wiretap Info After
By RYAN SINGEL
Nov. 11, 2008
When Barack Obama takes the oath of office on January 20, Americans won’t just
get a new president; they might finally learn the full extent of George W. Bush’s
warrantless domestic wiretapping.
Since The New York Times first revealed in 2005 that the NSA was eavesdropping
on citizens’ overseas phone calls and e-mail, few additional details about the
massive "Terrorist Surveillance Program" have emerged. That’s because
the Bush administration has stonewalled, misled and denied documents to Congress,
and subpoenaed the phone records of the investigative reporters.
Now privacy advocates are hopeful that President Obama will be more forthcoming
with information. But for the quickest and most honest account of Bush’s illegal
policies, they say don’t look to the incoming president. Watch instead for the
hidden army of would-be whistle-blowers who’ve been waiting for Inauguration
Day to open the spigot on the truth.
"I’d bet there are a lot of career employees in the intelligence agencies
who’ll be glad to see Obama take the oath so they can finally speak out against
all this illegal spying and get back to their real mission," says Caroline
Fredrickson, the ACLU’s Washington D.C. legislative director.
New Yorker investigative reporter Seymour Hersh already has a slew of sources
waiting to spill the Bush administration’s darkest secrets, he said in an interview
last month. "You cannot believe how many people have told me to call them

First let me say, after years of skepticism re the Democratic Party, I am a Progressive Democrat and so my comments reflect that. Someday perhaps someone more powerful than I will be able to dismantle the two party system, and make more genuine choice possible in this country. Right now, there are two parties. For eight years George W. Bush and Dick Cheney impostered as Republicans. I have said before and will say again, they would not have fit into my party and of this I am proud. They led a band of rogues that brought this country to the brink of absolute despotism. Let the Republicans worry about that mess. I remember telling my students long ago, I didn’t vote for Bill Clinton for what he would do, I voted for Bill Clinton for what he said, for the values he espoused, for the way his insistence on social justice resonated. After his election, his actions were, indeed, another matter.
The good news: Barack Obama seems to be a decent man, tough enough to steer this nation in the left direction, confident enough to know he will succeed, smart enough to know that the powerful right still has the means to inflict great pain and re-enter greater and stronger. His election has elated many, particularly me, for a whole host of reasons, but for our purposes the following two:
The reign of Bush/Cheney/Rove (given a peaceful transition) is over.
Though I don’t believe that this… Continue reading

While it is fitting that our nation reserves a special day to honor the sacrifice and commitment of our warriors, it also serves to highlight how we, as a country, have fallen short of caring for our veterans, reintegrating them back into our communities, and demanding that our military be used responsibly and only as a last resort. Over 1.7 million men and women of the U.S. military have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and many of them now struggle to cope with physical and emotional injuries, with family relationships strained because of prolonged separation, and with finding employment during an economic recession.
Members of Iraq Veterans Against the War know that in order to truly honor our veterans, we must listen to them, not just on Veterans Day, but on the other 364 days as well. It is for each other, our military brothers and sisters, and for our country that IVAW works every day to share our experiences, to challenge the predominant narrative of war as heroic and glorious, and to expose people to the brutal reality and true human costs of modern warfare.
Over the past four and a half years, IVAW has been working to transform our military experiences into a force for positive change. Be it at Winter Soldier this past March, Winter Soldier on the Hill in May, or at regional Winter Soldier events in Rochester, NY, Seattle, WA, Madison, WI, and others, IVAW has been dedicated to making… Continue reading

a bullet to his spine after serving in Iraq for less than a week, will be shown

veterans, and watching this film is just one of many ways you can listen.

Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan: Another way you can honor our veterans today is by listening to the Winter Soldier Hearings.
Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan featured testimony from U.S. veterans who served in those occupations, giving an accurate account of what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground. This four-day event brought together veterans from across the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan – and present video and photographic evidence. In addition, panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and other specialists gave context to the testimony. These panels covered everything from the history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for veterans’ health benefits and support. Learn more about these ongoing hearings and find links here.
Discussion of the very real doubts over the World Trade Center attacks was
conspicuously absent from the US presidential race. But America’s international
image will always be tainted as long as the uncertainty remains

Journal Issue 13
Every so often attention is called anew to the doubts surrounding the true
character of the events surrounding the 9/11 attacks. Recently, the report of
the collapse of Building 7 represented such an occasion. Any close student of
9/11 is aware of the many serious discrepancies between the official version
of what took place and the actual happenings on that fateful day in 2001. David
Ray Griffin and others have analyzed and assessed these discrepancies in such
an objective and compelling fashion that only wilful ignorance can maintain
that the 9/11 narrative should be treated as a closed book, and that the public
should move on to address the problems of the day.
To accept such a view is to acquiesce in what can be described at best as governmental
evasiveness and irresponsibility, a resolve to leave the discrepancies unexplained.
It is not paranoid under such circumstances to assume that the established elites
of the American governmental structure have something to hide, and much to explain.
What has not been established by the “9/11 Truth Movement” is a
convincing counter-narrative — that is, an alternate version of the events
that clears up to what degree, if at all, the attacks resulted from incompetence,
deliberate inaction,… Continue reading

* Watch video of protesters getting sprayed with pepper spray, from the August, 2008 standoff .
When a Jefferson County deputy deployed pepper spray into a crowd during the first night of the Democratic National Convention, he did not know that his targets were undercover Denver police officers.
During a melee that occurred Aug. 25 between protesters, police and bystanders near Civic Center Park, undercover Denver detectives staged a struggle with a police commander in order to get out of the crowd undetected.
A Jefferson County deputy, unaware of the presence of undercover police, thought that the commander was being attacked and deployed the pepper spray, according to a police use-of-force report obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado.
The report does not say whether the pepper spray used on the undercover police officers was the first deployment or whether the melee already was underway.
About 106 people were arrested during the incident that took place at 15th Street and Court Place.
Denver police have testified during court trials that they deployed officers to the area that night because they had gathered intelligence that anarchists had planned to gather in Civic Center Park, then move toward the 16th Street… Continue reading

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The FBI tracked about 108,000 potential terrorism threats
or suspicious incidents from mid-2004 to November 2007, but most were found
groundless, a Justice Department review found on Friday.
The department’s office of inspector general gave the figure in an audit of
the FBI’s terrorism case-tracking system, called Guardian, launched in 2002
after the September 11 attacks.
"The FBI determined that the overwhelming majority of the threat information
documented in Guardian had no nexus to terrorism. However, as a result of information
reported in Guardian the FBI initiated over 600 criminal and terrorism-related
investigations from October 2006 to December 2007," the inspector general’s
The report did not discuss the result of the investigations.
FBI policy requires that each threat or suspicious incident reported by the
public or other government agencies and law enforcement officers be reviewed
to determine whether there is a link to terrorism.
The report expressed concern over delays in the development of a related system,
called E-Guardian, for sharing terrorism-related information with local law
enforcement. It said the automated Guardian system had improved since it was
first implemented, and the number of incidents tracked had grown dramatically.
FBI spokesman John Miller said the agency had implemented steps to resolve
concerns and it accepted recommendations made by the inspector general.

The 9-11 attacks were the pretext which sold the myth of evil Muslim terrorists imminently threatening Americans. That tale allowed the Cheney-led members of the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) to implement their 1990 DPG plan for world control. The “war on terror” has nothing to do with protecting the U.S. and world’s people from “terrorists”, and everything to do with securing the American empire abroad and muzzling democracy and human rights at home. Designed to inspire popular support for U.S. wars of world conquest, it is modeled on Islamophobic stereotypes, policies, and political structures developed by the Israeli Likkud and Bush Sr. since 1979. To defeat this plan, we must overcome our Islamophobic fear of “terrorists” and stand in solidarity with Muslims.
1. Why a 9-11 Pretext?
…the War… Continue reading

A COPY OF ORWELL’S ‘NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR’ SENT TO EVERY MP
An Internet grass-roots campaign will this week deliver a copy of George Orwell’s prophetic novel ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ to every Member of Parliament.
The books will be inscribed with the words, ‘This book was a warning, not a blueprint’, and will arrive at Parliament on or before November 5th — a date of well known historical significance for that building.
Outraged by the continual attack upon civil liberties within our nation, a fortnight ago the Libertarian Party proposed reminding those in Westminster who they were elected to serve, and in whose interests the laws that they pass are meant to function.
Spread purely by word of mouth, a campaign to send each Member of Parliament their own copy of Orwell’s dystopian classic met with overwhelming support on the Internet, with many more books pledged than the 646 required to ensure that every one of our elected representatives receive a personal copy. The Libertarian Party contributed just 75 books itself, with the remainder coming (directly, or via campaign donations) from people of all political parties, and of none.
The UK Libertarian Party leader, Ian Parker-Joseph, explained, “As the people of Britain become ever more spied upon and ever more heavily taxed, as the government attempts to control how much we should smoke, eat and drink, as the state legislates to regulate ever more the minutiae of our lives, the Libertarian… Continue reading
Live election coverage will be available, for those of you who wish to find something other than corporate media, from several places. Here are two:
NoLiesRadio will broadcast live, beginning Tuesday at 4:00 pm Pacific – 7:00 pm Eastern – 11:00 GMT. (See note from NoLiesRadio below).
Free Speech Radio News will broadcast updates throughout the day and night. Listen at KKFI, and many other sources. See http://www.fsrn.org/content/election2008 for more details.
NoLiesRadio statement: We are covering the election results LIVE as we did all of the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates. We are authorized to carry the broadcast feed.
Given the fact that the two previous presidential elections were stolen, we believe it to be imperative that the people be extremely vigilent about this election. We will have extensive coverage on vote theft in addition to the election results themselves. We are also arming the people with facts and help as to what to do if they feel they have been swindled or cheated at the polls Tuesday, and if for some reason McCain makes a last minute victory that smells fishy, we are encouraging the folks to gather on Nov 5th in assemblies throughout the nation to fight back. This election could become part of the WAKE-UP call that will bring Americans out of their deep slumber and possibily give rise to becoming more sensitive regarding 911truth.
And we also believe that after… Continue reading
