A new EFF report pulls together everything that’s now known about the FBI’s monster internal records system.
By Jon Stokes
April 30, 2009
Earlier this week, the EFF published a new report detailing the FBI’s Investigative Data Warehouse, which appears to be something like a combination of Google and a university’s slightly out-of-date custom card catalog with a front-end written for Windows 2000 that uses cartoon icons that some work-study student made in Microsoft Paint. I guess I’m supposed to fear the IDW as an invasion of privacy, and indeed I do, but given the report’s description of it and my experiences with the internal-facing software products of large, sprawling, unaccountable bureaucracies, I mostly just fear for our collective safety.
The idea behind the system, which the FBI has been working on since at least 2002, is that the Bureau can dump all of its information in there so that it can be easily searched and shared. IDW contains more documents than the library of congress–a stew of TIFFs with OCRed text, multiple Oracle databases, news streamed in from the Internet, reports and records in various in-house data formats, watch lists, telephone data, and an alphabet soup of smaller databases and records repositories–all accessible as one sprawling system that processes batch jobs, runs queries, and issues alerts. In short, the IDW is an “everything bucket” for the FBI.
Complicating the picture is the fact that some parts of the system are classified as “secret,” while others aren’t.… Continue reading
Dear Friends Around The World,
Thanks to your generous support and ongoing efforts to keep 9/11 front and
center, NYC CAN eclipsed the milestone of 35,000 signatures on Sunday, April
We continue to charge ahead collecting hundreds of signatures everyday, but
we can only continue with YOUR support.
NYC CAN is growing. Our petitioners are becoming ever more skilled, now collecting
a rate of one signature for every dollar we spend. We have so far raised a total
of $7,800, and with the exception of modestly paying one representative to do
full-time outreach and fundraising, every dollar spent so far has gone into
paying petitioners to be out on the streets. Within two months, we will have
the required number of signatures to not only submit the petition but to submit
it with full certainty the referendum will be on the ballot come November 3,
We urge you now to dig deep so we can continue this effort. If every person
who reads this letter acts now to become a member of NYC CAN by donating just
$25, we will quickly surpass the bare minimum of $60,000 required to fund the
rest of our petitioning effort.
Please join our commitment to answers, accountability and action by standing
together and donating what you can – $25, $50 or $500 – today.
Dear Friends Around The World,
NYC CAN’s newest communication material is the NYC CAN Postcard. Our
petitioners and volunteers will begin handing these out to thousands of New
Yorkers next week.…

Engineers for 9/11 Truth (AE911Truth) are calling for a new, independent investigation
into the destruction of the World Trade Center high-rises. These building professionals
cite evidence of explosive demolition at all three WTC high-rises on 9/11 and
document the evidence at their website. Michael Heimbach, assistant director
of the FBI’s counterterrorism division, wrote
that their claims and conclusion were “backed by thorough research and analysis.”
AE911Truth will host exhibitor’s information booth #2609 at this year’s
annual convention of the prestigious American Institute of Architects (AIA).
The convention, with more than 800 exhibitors and more than 20,000 participating
architects, will take place in San Francisco’s Moscone Center, April 30-May
This exhibition will be followed up on Saturday May 2nd with a dynamic multi-media
presentation by AE911Truth founder Richard Gage, AIA. Mr Gage will cover the
forensic evidence found at the crime scene as well as a review of the omissions
in the official FEMA and NIST reports. Join AE911Truth at the Westin Market

In Germany the daily newspaper Junge Welt on March, 4 2009 published
following article on the new petition.
9/11 – Today’s Project of Investigation
At long last politicians from several countries succeeded to unite in calling for a “new, really independent
investigation to find out what happened on 9/11.” In the petition 12 politicians
from seven countries call on US president Barack Obama to authorize such an
The investigations until now were
conducted only by people who “were closely connected with the Bush/Cheney
administration, or where even working in it.”
Their findings differed radically
from results independent researchers from different fields have reached. These
researcher-groups–among them architects, engineers, firefighters, legal professionals,
pilots, religious leaders, academics, veterans and medical professionals–for
a long time have called for a new investigation. Now the time had come to have
politicians take it to heart. (Read the letter to President Obama.)
Doubts about the official version
of the collapse of the towers of the World Trade Center on 9/11 have been on
the mind of many people in the last years. A collapse of the of the myth about

Three British Muslims were today cleared of helping the 7 July bombers choose their targets by carrying out a reconnaissance mission in London seven months before the attacks that killed 52 people and injured almost 1,000.
A jury at Kingston crown court unanimously found Waheed Ali, 25, Sadeer Saleem, 28, and Mohammed Shakil, 32, all from Beeston, Leeds, not guilty of conspiring with the four bombers to cause explosions, after deliberating for eight days.
They are the only people to be charged over the attacks in 2005, which prompted the biggest criminal investigation in British history — more than 18,450 statements were taken and at least 37,000 exhibits were collected.
Ali and Shakil were, however, convicted of conspiracy to attend a place used for terrorist training. They were about to board a flight to Pakistan when they were arrested in 2007. The pair will be sentenced tomorrow afternoon.
The home secretary, Jacqui Smith, welcomed those guilty verdicts, which she said “clearly demonstrated the determined stance the UK takes against those suspected of involvement in terrorism”.
As the verdicts were read out, Ali smiled broadly, Saleem wiped his eyes and Shakil leant forward, mouthing “thank you” to the jury. The trio had been retried after a jury failed to reach a verdict on the charges relating to the 7 July attacks last year after about three weeks of deliberations.
Survivors of the attacks and family members of those who died said today’s verdicts strengthened the case for an independent inquiry into the bombings.…Continue reading
Threatened Federal Sanctions Against NYPD, Secret Service, FBI &
Mayor’s Office If Secret Ever Got Out
Furious Obama Apologizes: "It Will Never Happen Again"
April 28, 2009

NEW YORK (CBS) — A furious President Barack Obama ordered an internal review
of Monday’s low-flying photo op over the Statue of Liberty.CBS 2 HD has discovered
the feds will have plenty to question.
Federal officials knew that sending two fighter jets and Air Force One to buzz
ground zero and Lady Liberty might set off nightmarish fears of a 9/11 replay,
but they still ordered the photo-op kept secret from the public.
In a memo obtained by CBS 2 HD [Ed: posted below] the Federal Aviation
Administration’s James Johnston said the agency was aware of "the
possibility of public concern regarding DOD (Department of Defense)
aircraft flying at low altitudes" in an around New York City. But
they demanded total secrecy from the NYPD, the Secret Service, the
FBI and even the mayor’s office and threatened federal sanctions if
the secret got out. (Emphasis added)
"To say that it should not be made public knowing that it might scare
people it’s just confounding," Sen. Charles Schumer said. "It’s what
gives Washington and government a bad name. It’s sheer stupidity."
The flyover — apparently ordered by the White House Office of Military Affairs
so it would have… Continue reading

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) — Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari said on Monday that the whereabouts of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden remained a mystery and there was a suspicion that he could be dead.
Speaking to international media, Zardari said U.S. officials had told him that they had no trace of the al Qaeda chief, although they habitually say he is most likely in Pakistan.
Pakistan’s own intelligence agencies were no wiser, either, Zardari said.
“There is no news,” the president said. “They obviously feel that he does not exist anymore but that’s not confirmed, we can’t confirm that.”
Al Jazeera aired excerpts of an audio recording in March in which the speaker’s voice sounded like earlier messages from bin Laden, who has eluded all efforts to catch him since al Qaeda carried out the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
Bin Laden, if he is still alive, turned 52 on March 10, but he is known to suffer from ill-health.
There have been reports that he had died of natural causes in the past, but they have never been corroborated, and security analysts believe intelligence agencies monitoring jihadi websites on the Internet would have picked up some chatter.

A recently released 9/11 Commission memo highlights the role of government
“minders” who accompanied witnesses interviewed by the commission.
It was added to the National Archives’ files at the start of the year
and discovered there by History Commons contributor paxvector.
The memo, entitled “Executive Branch Minders’ Intimidation of Witnesses,”
The memo was drafted by three staffers on the commission’s Team 2, which
reviewed the overall structure of the US intelligence community. One of the
drafters was Kevin Scheid, a senior staffer who led the team. His co-writers
were Lorry Fenner, an air force intelligence officer, and lawyer Gordon Lederman.
The complaint was sent to the commission’s counsels, Daniel Marcus and
Steve Dunne, in October 2003, about halfway through the commission’s 19-month
The memo makes clear that the problems were not occurring only with witnesses
talking to Team 2, but also in “other teams’ interviews.”
A hand-written note on a draft of the memo says, “not one agency or minder
— also where we’ve sat in on other Teams’ interviews.”

Well, well. The New York Times has finally put a story together on the key role that two controversial psychologists played in devising the Bush administration’s torture policies. Guess we should be thankful for small favors.
Apparently, a NYTimes “exposé” requires a 21-month gestation period; just by way of pointing out that the substance of the Times “exposé” appeared in an article the July 2007 issue of Vanity Fair.
Katherine Eban, a Brooklyn-based journalist who writes about public health, authored that article and titled it “Rorschach and Awe.” It was the result of a careful effort to understand the role of psychologists in the torture of detainees in Guantánamo.
She identified the two psychologists as James Elmer Mitchell and Bruce Jessen, who she reported were inexperienced in interrogations and “had no proof of their tactics’ effectiveness” but nevertheless sold the Bush administration on a plan to subject captives to “psychic demolition,” essentially severing them from their personalities and scaring them “almost to death.”
In Wednesday’s New York Times, reporters Scott Shane and Mark Mazzetti plow much the same ground. But please do not misunderstand. They deserve praise for finally pushing their own article past the Times‘ censors, but let’s not pretend the startling revelations are new.
The Times ought to allow the likes of Shane and Mazzetti to publish these stories when they are fresh. Alternatively, the “newspaper of record” might at least report the findings of the likes of… Continue reading

Hayden had confirmed that the Bush administration only waterboarded Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Abu Zabaydah, and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashirit for one minute each. I told Franks that I didn’t believe that. Sure enough, one of the newly released torture memos reveals that Mohammed was waterboarded 183 times and Zubaydah was waterboarded 83 times. One of Stephen Bradbury’s 2005 memos asserted that “enhanced techniques” on Zubaydah yielded the identification of Mohammed and an alleged radioactive bomb plot by Jose Padilla. But FBI supervisory special agent Ali Soufan, who interrogated Zubaydah from March to June 2002, wrote in the New York Times that Zubaydah produced that information under traditional interrogation methods, before the harsh techniques were ever used.
Why, then, the relentless waterboarding of these two men? It turns out that high Bush officials put heavy pressure on Pentagon interrogators to get Mohammed and Zubaydah to reveal a link between Saddam Hussein and the 9/11 hijackers, in order to justify Bush’s illegal and unnecessary invasion of Iraq in 2003. That link was never established.
President Obama released the four memos in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by the ACLU. They describe unimaginably brutal techniques and provide “legal” justification for clearly illegal acts of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. In the face of monumental pressure from the CIA to keep them secret, Obama demonstrated great courage in deciding to make the grotesque memos public. At the same time, however, in… Continue reading

“Questioning 9/11 in Japan’s Parliament – Can Obama Change the USA?”
Co-authors of book are David Ray Griffin, Yumi Kikuchi, Akira Dojimaru and Chihaya.
Councilor Fujita is a current member and former director of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense. In this function he questioned 9/11 three times in parliament. Fujita claims that 9/11, as the main reason for the “War on Terror,” needs to be newly investigated in order to find peaceful solutions.
On April 8 there was a formal reception on the occasion of the publishing of Mr. Fujita’s book at the Tokyo Dome Hotel.
The event was organized and promoted by a large group of Mr. Fujita’s supporters including the Chairman of the daily newspaper Japan Times, several leading representatives of the Democratic Party and several business executives. They hosted the event in honour of Mr. Fujita.
Yumi Kikuchi, a well known peace and 9/11 activist, first presented a video lecture that had been prepared by co-author of the book, Akira Dojimaru, who lives in Spain and was not present at the event. The presentation explained in great detail the numerous main points that completely contradict the official 9/11 account of the US administration and the mainstream media. It was made clear that 9/11 is used to constantly justify wars.

WCW Editor’s note: Mathis Chiroux recently was called to appear before a board of U.S. Army officers in St. Louis, Missouri, and answer for his public refusal to participate in the activation and deployment orders for Iraq he had received in the summer of 2008. Mathis’ hearing resulted in a “general discharge under honorable conditions.” The following is a statement Mathis issued shortly after the hearing concluded.
On Apr. 21, I stood before the Army. I looked a board of officers in the eyes, and I told them I thought they were sending people off to participate in war crimes. And what did they say? Get out of here, Sergeant, and keep your damn G.I. Bill!!!
Indeed, folks! The Army awarded me a recommendation for a general discharge under honorable conditions from the Individual Ready Reserve for my refusal to deploy to Iraq last summer. This landmark decision means not only am I a free man, I’m free to continue school this fall with the “new” G.I. Bill that I earned while on active duty.
Though this discharge is identical to the one I refused in exchange for having this hearing, I can now rest easy knowing I never submitted, I never backed down and the Army has heard my story.
And not just my story, but the stories of those brave veterans at Winter Soldier and those who’ve participated in IVAW’s Warrior Writers’ program. Full texts of both books were submitted to the… Continue reading

With the release of the U.S. Senate’s report on the Bush Administration torture program, it is now incontrovertibly clear — and officially established by the highest, most respectable Establishment institutions — that George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and a host of other top officials deliberately, willingly, and with malice aforethought, established a system of interrogation using brutal techniques that they knew were against the law. Hence the need for the torture memos that attempted to give retroactive legal cover for atrocities that were already taking place at the orders of the White House and the Pentagon. They were also told repeatedly that these tortures were ineffective at producing useful intelligence.
What’s more, it is now undeniable that they began this program long before they had captured even one “high-profile al Qaeda detainee,” and that they were using these heinous techniques not in a desperate bid to save the nation from further attacks — which has long been their preening, self-serving claim — but instead to produce spurious data about the non-existent link between Iraq and al Qaeda. In other words, George Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld ordered their minions to beat and torment captives in order to get them to say something a — anything — that could then be used to “justify” a war of aggression that these grand statesmen had been planning long before the September 11 attacks.
You cannot disentangle the torture program from the war… Continue reading

Let Sibel Edmonds Speak
Sibel gave a 75-min interview to Electric Politics on April 10. You can listen to it here. Mizgin has an overview of the interview here.
A partial transcript follows:
Sibel Edmonds: First of all, it has been documented in the past several decades, the importance of narcotics in the Turkish economy, but also the role of Turkish MIT – that is Turkish Intelligence – and the military having an active role. But you’re also looking at the increased role of certain Central Asian countries and the Caucuses, and if you look at some of these regimes, these are the regimes that we have been supporting. Their economies also have become dependent on narcotics, because they have become a major transit – and in some places, for certain countries such as Azerbaijan, they have become major production centers.
After they shut down the casinos in Turkey – around 1998 – many of the large casinos in Turkey which were used to launder a lot of money, that also had to do with the narcotics, they actually moved and relocated to Azerbaijan, and there were several that went to Kazakhstan. So if you go through some of those Central Asian countries and you look at the list of the casinos, and you look at the ownership, you will see mainly Turkish ownership, and these are Turkish holding companies that relocated in 1998 to those countries.
George Kenney:… Continue reading
