I wrote The Shock Doctrine in the hopes that it would make us all
better prepared for the next big shock. Well, that shock has certainly arrived,
along with gloves-off attempts to use it to push through radical pro-corporate
policies (which of course will further enrich the very players who created the
market crisis in the first place…).
The best summary of how the right plans to use the economic crisis to push
through their policy wish list comes from Former Republican House Speaker Newt
Gingrich. On Sunday, Gingrich laid out 18 policy prescriptions for Congress
to take in order to “return to a Reagan-Thatcher policy of economic growth
through fundamental reforms.” In the midst of this economic crisis, he
is actually demanding the repeal of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which would lead
to further deregulation of the financial industry. Gingrich is also calling
for reforming the education system to allow “competition” (a.k.a.
vouchers), strengthening border enforcement, cutting corporate taxes and his
signature move: allowing offshore drilling.
It would be a grave mistake to underestimate the right’s ability to use this
crisis — created by deregulation and privatization — to demand more of the
same. Don’t forget that Newt Gingrich’s 527 organization, American Solutions
for Winning the Future, is still riding the wave of success from its offshore
drilling campaign, “Drill Here, Drill Now!” Just four months ago,
offshore drilling was not even on the political radar and now the U.S. House
of Representatives has… Continue reading

We the people must now seize the time! We have always had the capability of
determining our own destiny, but for various reasons, the people failed to elect
the leaders who provided the correct political will. There was always some corporate
or private special interest that stood in the way of the public good. And they
always seemed to have the power of the purse to throw around and influence public
opinion or our elected officials. The very foundation of the U.S. economy is
crumbling underneath our feet. This represents a unique moment in U.S. history
and we must now seize the time for self-determination–for health care, education,
ecological wisdom, justice, and all the policies that will make a difference
in the lives of the people including an end to all wars, including the drug
The crisis was staved off for a time for some of our major finance engines
when they were able to obtain bridge funding from certain sovereign wealth funds.
That option grows increasingly dim as The Federal Reserve is becoming the lender
of last resort. This means that the people are becoming the owners of the primary
instruments of U.S. capital and finance. This now means that the people have
a say in how these instruments are to be used and what their priorities ought
to be. The people should now have more say in how their tax dollars are spent
and what the priorities of government… Continue reading

Soldiers barking orders at each other is so 20th Century. That’s why the U.S.
Army has just awarded a $4 million contract to begin developing "thought
helmets" that would harness silent brain waves for secure communication
among troops. Ultimately, the Army hopes the project will "lead to direct
mental control of military systems by thought alone."
If this sounds insane, it would have been as recently as a few years ago. But
improvements in computing power and a better understanding of how the brain
works have scientists busy hunting for the distinctive neural fingerprints that
flash through a brain when a person is talking to himself. The Army’s initial
goal is to capture those brain waves with incredibly sophisticated software
that then translates the waves into audible radio messages for other troops
in the field. "It’d be radio without a microphone, " says Dr. Elmar
Schmeisser, the Army neuroscientist overseeing the program. "Because soldiers
are already trained to talk in clean, clear and formulaic ways, it would be
a very small step to have them think that way."
B-movie buffs may recall that Clint Eastwood used similar "brain-computer
interface" technology in 1982′s Firefox, named for the Soviet fighter plane
whose weapons were controlled by the pilot’s thoughts. (Clint was sent to steal
the plane, natch.) Yet it’s not as far-fetched as you might think: video gamers
are eagerly awaiting a crude commercial version of brain wave technology —
a $299 headset… Continue reading

PROGRAM WILL RETURN SUNDAY, 9 A.M. Eastern
Saturday morning, the dean of Massachusetts School of Law at Andover will convene
a two day planning session with a single focus: To arrest, put to trial and
carry out sentence on criminals in the Bush Administration.
The conference, arranged by Lawrence Vevel, cofounder of the Andover school,
will focus on which of Bush’s officials and members of Congress could be charged
with war crimes. The plan also calls for "necessary organizational structures"
to be established, with the purpose of pursuing the guilty "to the ends
of the Earth."
"For Bush, Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and John Yoo to spend years
in jail or go to the gallows for their crimes would be a powerful lesson to
future American leaders," Velvel said in a media advisory.
"He is a former drunk, was a serial failure in business who had to repeatedly
be bailed out by daddy’s friends and wanna-be-friends, was unable to speak articulately
despite the finest education(s) that money and influence can buy, has a dislike
of reading, so that 100-page memos have to be boiled down to one page for him,
is heedless of facts and evidence, and appears not even to know the meaning
of truth," said Vevel.…

Although I was no longer employed at LAX on September 11, 2001, I had worked
there until about two months before as the Quality Control Manager for Kiewit
Pacific Construction on the Taxiway “C” project. A large part of
my work involved security in the Air Port Operations, or APO (but now called
the “Airport Operations Area,” or “AOA”), which is where
the planes are. On the morning of September 11, 2001, I listened with great
interest to LAX Security officials in the APO discussing the attacks and trying
to get more information.
“LAX Security” involves the Los Angeles World Airport Police Department,
the Los Angeles Police Department, and sometimes the FBI and/or the California
Highway Patrol. I can, incidentally, testify that LAX Security performed very
professionally on 9/11. Despite extreme pressure, confusion, and fear (they
had received information that LAX was a target), they executed the emergency
After describing what I heard while listening to LAX Security, I will suggest
ways in which my account could be corroborated.
On the morning of 9/11, I was working as Deputy Inspector representing the
City of LA Building and Safety Department for the seismic retrofit of the LA
Hilton Towers Hotel, only a few minutes by car from where I had worked at LAX.
When I realized, after the second strike on the WTC, that the country was under
attack, I decided that I should go to the APO, because I was one of only a few
persons who would know how to fix certain parts of the new security systems
if problems developed.…

In last Monday’s New York Times, David Sanger and William Broad wrote
a front-page article
about the CIA’s involvement in the nuclear black market.
The article demonstrates (again) that the New York Times, Sanger &
Broad in particular, has simply become a mouthpiece for the government (see
my previous articles 1,
but they did let one fact slip through to the readership. I can only presume
that the slip was accidental, because they don’t appear to have understood the
ramifications of what they reported:
The US Government is covering up the fact that US citizens and entities are
involved in the nuclear black market.
Three members of the Tinner family in Switzerland were key suppliers to AQ
Khan’s nuclear black market ring. They were arrested in 2004 and have been awaiting
trial but the US government has been trying to sabotage the Swiss trial because
“compromising and embarrassing information about the CIA’s activities with the
Khan network” would be exposed if the trial were to proceed.
The New York Times reported that in July 2007, the Swiss Justice
Minister came to the US to discuss the case with high-level US officials, apparently
to find a mutually-acceptable arrangement regarding how to deal with the Tinner
According to an anonymous former Bush administration official:
“The State Department wanted the bomb plans destroyed as a way to stem nuclear proliferation, while the C.I.A. wanted to… Continue reading
At the Ron Paul Rally for the Republic held at the Target Center in St. Paul, Minnesota a few blocks from the Republican National Convention, former Governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura questioned 9/11 to a crowd of nearly 10,000 people and received an overwhelmingly positive response.
“I’m going to move on to another subject that a lot of people don’t want to discuss today,” he said, “I know when I discuss it, it’s amazing, I get attacked!” The crowd listened intently as he went on, “And that’s something called 9/11!” The crowd erupted into spontaneous applause. Ventura continued and discussed the fact that on the FBI’s most wanted terrorist page, Osama bin Laden is not wanted for 9/11. He asked why expressed disgust with the Bush Administration’s stonewalling any investigation into the attacks.
Below is the video of Ventura’s 9/11 remarks, as well as his response to reporters when asked about the subject backstage after his speech:

In recent days there is mounting evidence of the advance of totalitarianism
in the political and media mainstream. The entire Western world, led by the
United States, has embraced a Georgian regime, which invaded South Ossetia totally
demolishing its capital city of 50,000 residents, assassinated 1500 men, women
and children and dozens of Russian peace keepers. The US has mobilized a naval
and air armada off the Iranian coast, prepared to annihilate a country of 70
million people. The New York Times published an essay by a prominent
Israeli historian, which advocates the nuclear incineration of Iran. All the
major mass media have mounted a systematic propaganda campaign against China,
supporting each and every terrorist and separatist group, and whipping up public
opinion in favor of launching a New Cold War. There is little doubt that this
new wave of imperial aggression and bellicose rhetoric is meant to deflect domestic
discontent and distract public opinion from the deepening economic crises.
The Financial Times (FT), once the liberal, enlightened voice of the
financial elite (in contrast to the aggressively neo-conservative Wall Street
Journal) has yielded to the totalitarian-militarist temptation. The feature
article of the weekend supplement of August 16/17, 2008 — “The Face
of 9/11″ — embraces the forced confession of a 9/11 suspect elicited
through 5 years of hideous torture in the confines of secret prisons. To make
their case, the FT published a half-page blow-up photo first circulated by former
CIA… Continue reading

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers has asked current and former White
House aides and ex-CIA officials to respond to questions about an alleged scheme
to create a bogus letter in late 2003 linking Saddam Hussein to al-Qaeda.
In sending the interview requests Wednesday, Conyers is following up on a disputed story in journalist Ron Suskind’s new book, The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism, which includes an account of how the mysterious letter originated.
The book cites statements from former CIA associate deputy director of operations Rob Richer and John Maguire, the former chief of the CIA’s Iraq Operations Group/Near East Division, as indicating that the White House ordered the CIA to produce the bogus letter to retroactively justify the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003.
Richer and Maguire gave Suskind on-the-record interviews, which the author recorded, discussing the reasons the letter was created and saying that it likely emanated from Vice President Dick Cheney’s office. Both men have since recanted their statements.
Conyers, who has held periodic hearings on abuses of power by George W. Bush’s administration, sent letters to former CIA Director George Tenet; the CIA’s former executive director A.B. “Buzzy” Krongard; Cheney’s former chief of staff I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby; and John Hannah, another Cheney assistant — as well as to Richer and Maguire.

Last week, Scott Horton interviewed (audio) investigative journalist Joe Lauria. Lauria was one of the co-authors of the three-part (1, 2, 3) series on the case of former FBI translator Sibel Edmonds for the UK’s Sunday Times.
In the interview Lauria discusses the Sibel Edmonds case, the state of the US media, and the Military Industrial Complex in the context of his new book with presidential candidate Mike Gravel: “A Political Odyssey: The Rise of American Militarism and One Mans Fight to Stop It“
In the interview, Lauria says that he spoke at length to the three FBI agents who were Sibel’s immediate bosses at the FBI and that they “corroborated in general terms, that this story is true.”
Lauria describes how he recently interviewed one of the FBI agents at his home for 90 minutes, and met another of Sibel’s former bosses several times outside his house. The agents are unwilling to provide detailed corroboration on a lot of the details in the case because they fear being sent to prison, but their willingness to speak to Lauria about the case, and their supportive statements that “She’s not crazy,” provide generalized corroboration on the case.
The FBI itself is not happy that Lauria and the Sunday Times are still looking into the Edmonds case and they made a “formal complaint” with the Sunday Times (a British media outlet!) that Lauria stay away from the… Continue reading

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
St. Paul, Minnesota — August 12, 2008 — Impeach for Peace (IfP), along with
others looking to demonstrate at the Republican National Convention (RNC), filed
a lawsuit Friday with the help of the ACLU of Minnesota in Ramsey County District
Court demanding our right to free speech. Plaintiffs include: Jodin Morey and
Mikael Rudolph of Impeach for Peace, Colleen and Ross Rowley, and Ron Deharporte.
Impeach for Peace is a grassroots, nonpartisan organization based in Minnesota
with chapters in twelve states throughout the country working to achieve the
impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney and holding
them and future elected officials fully accountable under the Rule of Law.
The RNC is having their election year convention in St. Paul, Minnesota at
the Xcel Energy Center. During this event, the St. Paul Police have decided
to relegate most speech activities in what they call the ‘Primary Event
Area’ to an inadequate ‘Designated Public Assembly Area’ or
free speech zone. The ‘Primary Event Area’ remains to be fully defined
by the police, making it impossible for people to know where in St. Paul they
can exercise their rights to freedom of expression and assembly. At the convention,
members of congress, mayors, governors, the President and Vice-President of
the United States are expected to be in attendance. This provides IfP and other
potential demonstrators with a unique opportunity to express their political
messages to these governmental officials.
The lawsuit alleges that the St. Paul City Council and police have created
guidelines for the RNC which restrict free speech to areas that are “inadequate
and unacceptably small.”
The ACLU also alleges that the City Council/Police denied IfP their due process
rights as stipulated in the Minnesota State Constitution by failing to give
notice of their plans regarding free speech restrictions, which would have allowed
for public comment and a public hearing.…

13/08/08 “ICH” — – Sanborn: When I read your article, “Marching
Off Into Tyranny,” I was impressed by how you were able to concisely sum
up one of the most important issues that we face as Americans, namely, the erosion
of our civil liberties, mostly due to fabricated terrorism such as the anthrax
scare and the attacks on 9/11. You talk about the Florida university professor,
Al-Arian, who continues to be victimized by the Feds although a jury has cleared
him of any terrorism charges. [As of August 8, 2008, the Associated Press states,
"U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema postponed the trial indefinitely,
questioning whether the government was overeager in filing charges." –KS]
What was your wake-up call, Dr. Roberts, to the fact that the current administration
was determined to take away the civil liberties of Americans?
Roberts: When they responded to 9/11 with the Patriot Act. That document was
thick, and it would have taken months and months to prepare it, yet it came
out shortly after the 9/11 attacks.
Why does combating terrorism require an assault on the Constitution and the
Bill of Rights? It was clear to me that there was an undeclared agenda there.
On the day of 9/11, I knew right away that something was wrong. I had been
an engineering student at Georgia Tech, and things just didn’t add up.
As I watched the towers fall, I could see that the buildings were blowing up
from the top, at least initially.… Continue reading

Last month 25-year-old U.S. Army PFC Robin Long became the first war resister
since the Vietnam War to be forcefully deported from Canadian soil and handed
over to military authorities. Robin is currently being held in the El Paso County
Jail, near Colorado Springs, Colorado, awaiting a military court martial for
resisting the unjust and illegal war against and occupation of Iraq. Robin
will be court martialed for desertion “with intent to remain away permanently” — Article
85 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice — in early September. The maximum
allowable penalty for a guilty verdict on this charge is three years confinement,
forfeiture of pay, and a dishonorable discharge from the Army.
In order to expedite Robin’s trial, it appears that his unit command,
the Fourth Brigade Combat Team, Fourth Infantry Division is opting to not charge
Robin with speech-related violations of military discipline; opting to try and
convict Robin as fast as possible.
Robin went absent without leave (AWOL) from the Army in 2005, realizing that
he had significant moral opposition to the war and the lies he had been told
regarding the reason for invasion and occupation of Iraq. After being transferred
to an Iraq bound combat unit, Robin went to Boise, Id. (his home town) where
he stayed for several months, before traveling to Canada.
Robin recently talked to Courage to Resist about why he enlisted. “When
the U.S. first attacked Iraq, I was told by my president that it was because
of direct ties to Al-Qaida and weapons of mass destruction.” Robin explained
that while he was uneasy about his personal role in fighting, the Iraq War seemed

A new book by the author Ron Suskind claims that the White House ordered the CIA to forge a back-dated, handwritten letter from the head of Iraqi intelligence to Saddam Hussein.
Suskind writes in “The Way of the World,” to be published Tuesday, that the alleged forgery — adamantly denied by the White House — was designed to portray a false link between Hussein’s regime and al Qaeda as a justification for the Iraq war.
The author also claims that the Bush administration had information from a top Iraqi intelligence official “that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq — intelligence they received in plenty of time to stop an invasion.”
The letter’s existence has been reported before, and it had been written about as if it were genuine. It was passed in Baghdad to a reporter for The (London) Sunday Telegraph who wrote about it on the front page of Dec. 14, 2003, under the headline, “Terrorist behind September 11 strike ‘was trained by Saddam.’”
The Telegraph story by Con Coughlin (which, coincidentally, ran the day Hussein was captured in his “spider hole”) was touted in the U.S. media by supporters of the war, and he was interviewed on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
“Over the next few days, the Habbush letter continued to be featured prominently in the United States and across the globe,” Suskind writes. “Fox’s Bill O’Reilly trumpeted the story Sunday night on ‘The O’Reilly Factor,’ talking breathlessly about details of the story and exhorting, ‘Now, if this is true, that blows the lid off al Qaeda–Saddam.’”
According to Suskind, the administration had been in contact with the director of the Iraqi intelligence service in the last years of Hussein’s regime, Tahir Jalil Habbush al-Tikriti.…Continue reading
