Ed has been an ardent supporter of numerous social justice causes for decades and he is a current supporter of 911 Truth. Ed is probably best known for his character Lou Grant on the Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970 and his role as a journalist on the Lou Grant show from 1977-1982. He won an Emmy for his role on Roots and also 6 other Emmys. His movie and TV career has spanned almost a half a century and he has acted in over 20 movies... most recently he co-starred in the feature film Gigantic with John Goodman; and had an Emmy nominated guest appearance on CSI/NY and currently he is the lead voice of Carl Fredricksen in Pixar's 2009 box-office-hit UP and has narrated the documentary film “The Oil Factor: Behind the War on Terror”. He has been a prominent member of the Democratic Socialists of America and has served two terms as president of the Screen Actors Guild, in which capacity he opposed the US policy in Central America. He also played a prominent role in the 1980 SAG strike. He has been active in a variety of other causes, such as the movement to free Mumia Abu-Jamal and in Racism Watch and has consistently served and committed himself to the rights of the working performer in addition to advocating for human rights, world peace, environmental preservation and political freedom.
