At 7:30 a.m. this morning, they climbed a nine-foot fence to occupy a 35-foot-high
ledge at the National Archives.
And five members of the Veterans for Peace organization have been there ever
since. They say they’re veterans of Vietnam and Iraq, anti-war activists, and
soldiers for a cause who plan to fast for 24 hours in protest of the Bush administration.
Seeking the criminal prosecution of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, the organization
distributed “Citizens’ Arrest Warrants” to tourists waiting in line
to enter the archives, which houses the key documents of U.S. history: the Declaration
of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
In a press release, the group described the reasons for its protest:
Bush and Cheney’s serial abuse of the law of the land clearly marks
them as domestic enemies of the Constitution. They have illegally invaded
and occupied Iraq, deliberately destroyed civilian infrastructure, authorized
torture, and unlawfully detained prisoners. These actions clearly mark them
as war criminals. Accountability extends beyond impeachment to prosecution
for war crimes even after their terms of office expire….
We are not conducting ourselves in a disorderly manner; our action is well-ordered
and well-considered. We are not trespassing; we have come to the home of our
Constitution to honor our oath to defend it.
So far, authorities have not interfered with the peaceful protest or the sign.
Yes, there’s a sign. A 22-foot-by-x8-foot banner draped across the Constitution
Avenue side of the archives says, “DEFEND… Continue reading

I wrote The Shock Doctrine in the hopes that it would make us all
better prepared for the next big shock. Well, that shock has certainly arrived,
along with gloves-off attempts to use it to push through radical pro-corporate
policies (which of course will further enrich the very players who created the
market crisis in the first place…).
The best summary of how the right plans to use the economic crisis to push
through their policy wish list comes from Former Republican House Speaker Newt
Gingrich. On Sunday, Gingrich laid out 18 policy prescriptions for Congress
to take in order to “return to a Reagan-Thatcher policy of economic growth
through fundamental reforms.” In the midst of this economic crisis, he
is actually demanding the repeal of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which would lead
to further deregulation of the financial industry. Gingrich is also calling
for reforming the education system to allow “competition” (a.k.a.
vouchers), strengthening border enforcement, cutting corporate taxes and his
signature move: allowing offshore drilling.
It would be a grave mistake to underestimate the right’s ability to use this
crisis — created by deregulation and privatization — to demand more of the
same. Don’t forget that Newt Gingrich’s 527 organization, American Solutions
for Winning the Future, is still riding the wave of success from its offshore
drilling campaign, “Drill Here, Drill Now!” Just four months ago,
offshore drilling was not even on the political radar and now the U.S. House
of Representatives has… Continue reading

We the people must now seize the time! We have always had the capability of
determining our own destiny, but for various reasons, the people failed to elect
the leaders who provided the correct political will. There was always some corporate
or private special interest that stood in the way of the public good. And they
always seemed to have the power of the purse to throw around and influence public
opinion or our elected officials. The very foundation of the U.S. economy is
crumbling underneath our feet. This represents a unique moment in U.S. history
and we must now seize the time for self-determination–for health care, education,
ecological wisdom, justice, and all the policies that will make a difference
in the lives of the people including an end to all wars, including the drug
The crisis was staved off for a time for some of our major finance engines
when they were able to obtain bridge funding from certain sovereign wealth funds.
That option grows increasingly dim as The Federal Reserve is becoming the lender
of last resort. This means that the people are becoming the owners of the primary
instruments of U.S. capital and finance. This now means that the people have
a say in how these instruments are to be used and what their priorities ought
to be. The people should now have more say in how their tax dollars are spent
and what the priorities of government… Continue reading

It certainly pays to be Treasury Secretary if your former firm is a brokerage
house, a new study says.
Goldman Sachs Group — formerly run by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, and
Morgan Stanley, stand to be among the biggest beneficiaries of a $700 billion
"Its benefits, in its current form, will be largely limited to investment
banks and other banks that have aggressively written down the value of their
holdings and have already recognized the attendant capital impairment,"
Jeffrey Rosenberg, Bank of America’s head of credit strategy research, wrote
in a report obtained by Bloomberg News yesterday.
Paulson was the head of Goldman Sach’s investment banking division from 1990
to 1994. He later became chairman and chief executive officer of Goldman, and
left his post to join the Bush Administration.
According to the study, the bailout benefits Paulson’s former firm more because
banks haven’t had to write down as many troubled mortage assets under accounting
rules. This means that participating in the program would cause them to actually
lose capital, as opposed to investment banks, which stand to gain.
Paulson $700 billion program is designed to remove "bad assets" from
the US financial markets to prevent credit for businesses from drying up, which
would send the economy into a further tailspin. Many businesses rely on credit
to fund their daily operations.
Lawmakers are debating the plan today.
"While Goldman and Morgan Stanley, both based in New York, were yesterday
granted permission… Continue reading

Before the Congress adjourns, I will bring forth a new proposal for the establishment
of a National Commission on Truth and Reconciliation, which will have the power
to compel testimony and gather official documents to reveal to the American
people not only the underlying deception which has divided us, but in that process
of truth seeking set our nation on a path of reconciliation.
We suffer in our remembrance of 9/11, because of the terrible loss of innocent
lives on that grim day. We also suffer because 9/11 was seized as an opportunity
to run a political agenda, which has set America on a course of the destruction
of another nation and the destruction of our own Constitution. And we have become
less secure as a result of the warped practice of pursing peace through the
exercise of pre-emptive military strength.
It is not simply 9/11 that needs to be remembered. We also need to remember
the politicization of 9/11 and the polarizing narrative which followed, locking
us into endless conflict, a war on terror which has wrought further terror worldwide
and which has severely damaged our standing worldwide as an honorable, compassionate
nation. As we were all victims of 9/11, so we have become victims of the interpretation
Our government’s external response to 9/11 was to attack a nation which did
not attack us. Indeed on the first anniversary of 9/11, the Bush Administration
issued a well-publicized stern warning… Continue reading
Elaine Brower and Prachi Noor, members of the World Can’t Wait National Steering Committee:
The police repression of anti-war protest that took place at both national political conventions deeply angered members of the peace community, as well as the many people in this country who were shocked at the behavior of law enforcement. There are those who might believe this brutalization of those who were peacefully demonstrating, with permits issued by the City, and which people believe is their ‘right’ under the Constitution, was an aberration or “over-reaction.”
However, what we saw was an emerging police state further testing new weapons and tactics, and learning how much they can get away with.
In St. Paul, the repression began with over a year ago with infiltration by paid informers of protest organizers, and “pre-emptive” raids on private homes and meeting places, leading to overtly political “conspiracy” charges. Police from around the country were led by Homeland Security in the wanton use of concussion grenades thrown in succession at retreating protesters; smoke bombs; an array of tear gas & pepper gas; wooden batons (bats); weapons, including AR15 automatic assault rifles drawn on unarmed and passive people; riot control horses and dump trucks with blades down as if to scoop up anyone in the streets.
This fierceness of control is what is done in Iraq and Afghanistan over the last 7-1/2 years in our names by our military and mercenaries alike, and what has and always will be done in communities of color… Continue reading
Join the Phone Blockade – A Simple Call to Impeach Print E-mail
Buddy, can you spare 5 minutes a day?
If you believe the country is going in the wrong direction and are frustrated by the refusal of the legislative branch, our Congress, to exercise their sworn duty to support and defend the Constitution, then you must have wondered what can you really do about it? What difference can one person make?
There are many of us; the frustrated majority. We want to know what it is going to take to turn things around. What can we do to get Congress to abandon their business as usual attitude and put impeachment on the table now? How can we send them a clear message? They need to quit trying to run out the clock. There is still plenty of time for them to impeach the President and Vice President! There is no legitimate basis for their failure to take action. The House impeached Bill Clinton on December 19, 1998 and the Senate trial lasted from January 7 through February 12, 1999. Not having sufficient time remaining is not the issue. They do not have the will to do it.
We believe that each one of us, acting together, can make an enormous difference, especially if we take one specific, coordinated action. Best of all, it is easy. It doesn’t cost anything and it is legal. In fact, it is our civic duty. Call a member of the House Judiciary Committee… Continue reading

According to the official account of 9/11, Wedge 1 of the Pentagon was struck by Flight 77, which was a Boeing 757. If so, there surely would have been debris from the plane to support this claim. But, it appears, there was not. People who inspected Wedge 1 shortly after the attack almost universally reported an absence of the kind of debris that would have been left by the crash of a large airliner. I will give several examples.
F-16 pilot Dean Eckmann, who was asked to fly over the Pentagon and report on the extent of the damage, said that he suspected that the damage had been caused by “a big fuel tanker truck because of the amount of smoke and flames coming up and … there was no airplane wreckage off to the side.”1
I knew it was a crash site before we got there, and I didn’t know what it was going to look like. I couldn’t imagine because the building is like rock solid. I expected to see the airplane, so I guess my initial impression was, “Where’s the plane? How come there’s not a plane?” I would have thought the building would have stopped it and somehow we would have seen something like part of, or half of the plane, or the lower part, or the back of the plane. So it was just a… Continue reading

Soldiers barking orders at each other is so 20th Century. That’s why the U.S.
Army has just awarded a $4 million contract to begin developing "thought
helmets" that would harness silent brain waves for secure communication
among troops. Ultimately, the Army hopes the project will "lead to direct
mental control of military systems by thought alone."
If this sounds insane, it would have been as recently as a few years ago. But
improvements in computing power and a better understanding of how the brain
works have scientists busy hunting for the distinctive neural fingerprints that
flash through a brain when a person is talking to himself. The Army’s initial
goal is to capture those brain waves with incredibly sophisticated software
that then translates the waves into audible radio messages for other troops
in the field. "It’d be radio without a microphone, " says Dr. Elmar
Schmeisser, the Army neuroscientist overseeing the program. "Because soldiers
are already trained to talk in clean, clear and formulaic ways, it would be
a very small step to have them think that way."
B-movie buffs may recall that Clint Eastwood used similar "brain-computer
interface" technology in 1982′s Firefox, named for the Soviet fighter plane
whose weapons were controlled by the pilot’s thoughts. (Clint was sent to steal
the plane, natch.) Yet it’s not as far-fetched as you might think: video gamers
are eagerly awaiting a crude commercial version of brain wave technology —
a $299 headset… Continue reading

Shortly after the first strike on the World Trade Center, which occurred at 8:46 AM on 9/11, Michael Hess, New York City’s corporation counsel, and Barry Jennings, the deputy director of the Emergency Services Department of the New York City Housing Authority, headed to the Office of Emergency Management’s Emergency Operating Center, which was on the 23rd floor of WTC 7, where they assumed that Mayor Rudy Giuliani would be. But when Hess and Jennings arrived, the place was empty. Jennings then telephoned someone to ask what they should do and was told that they should leave immediately. Finding that the elevators would not work, they started down the stairs. When they reached the sixth floor, however, there was a powerful explosion beneath them, which, Jennings told the makers of Loose Change Final Cut,1 caused the landing on which they were standing to give way. Making their way back up to the eighth floor, they were able to break a window and call for help. Hess later reported: “[W]e were trapped on the eighth floor with smoke, thick smoke, all around us, for about an hour and a half [before] the New York Fire Department . . . came and got us out.”2
Hess made this statement while being interviewed by Frank Ucciardo of UPN 9 News “on Broadway about a block from City Hall,” almost a half mile from WTC 7. This interview began before noon, most likely at 11:34.… Continue reading

The seemingly mundane insurance business is, in fact, one of the primary weapons

In an article in the Syrian government daily Teshreen, former Syrian information
minister Dr. Mahdi Dakhlallah wrote that the U.S. intelligence agencies were
behind the 9/11 attacks, and that their aim in this was to pave the way for
implementing a previously readied plan to invade Afghanistan and Iraq.
Following is a translation of the main points of Dakhlallah’s article.
“On the Seventh Anniversary of 9/11, The Truth is Still Not Unequivocal,
And the Mystery Remains”
“On the seventh anniversary of the September 11 events, the truth is still
not unequivocal, and the mystery remains. The immediate and simple explanation
according to the official version of the events is, to this day, the object
of criticism and sometimes even of derision.
“The world may have to wait 25 years for the truth to come to light and
for the secret documents and information about what happened to be presented.
But who cares about the truth?
“What is important, always, is the use of the events in order to carry
out a strategy planned in advance – which raises the possibility that the injured
party itself carried out the deed, especially if the matter concerns a country
with great strategic interests such as the U.S.
“Many are the instances of violence and terror in the land of Uncle Sam,
and no one knows what is behind them. Who killed President Kennedy? To date,
no one knows the truth. Who is behind… Continue reading
New rules for national security investigations will help protect Americans

By LARA JAKES JORDAN
Associated Press Writer
New rules for national security investigations will help protect Americans
from terror attacks, FBI Director Robert Mueller told lawmakers Tuesday, even
if they single out people from the Middle East.
Skeptical Democrats clashed with Mueller, who told the House Judiciary Committee
that FBI agents would no longer need solid evidence or allegations of wrongdoing
to spy on Americans even before opening investigations. Democrats also expressed
doubts that the Justice Department and FBI would protect civil liberties and
privacy rights after years of previous abuses and stymied congressional oversight.
During nearly two hours of testimony, Mueller described the tentative rules
– known as the attorney general’s guidelines – as a proactive way to prevent
The new rules would ensure that suspicious behavior is investigated, Mueller
said, citing a July 2001 memo from an FBI agent in Phoenix who noted a rising
trend of Middle Eastern men taking flight lessons. The agent’s warning was ignored,
and the 9/11 Commission later said it could have served as a clue to al-Qaida’s
“It is that kind of threat and identification of a very suspicious circumstance
that would warrant further investigation,” Mueller said. Additionally,
he said current guidelines make it “very difficult” for agents to
look into people believed to be traveling to terror hotspots, such as training
camps in Pakistan.…

Re: Public Comments on WTC 7 Draft Reports
Dear Mr. Cauffman,
I am writing on behalf of a group of scientists, scholars, engineers and building professionals who are dedicated to scientific research regarding the destruction of all three high-rise buildings (WTC 1, 2 and 7) on September 11, 2001. We have examined the draft reports recently released by NIST purporting to explain the demise of WTC Building 7 (collectively referred to herein as the “Report”). We have found many areas that need to be revised and re-examined by NIST personnel before they release a final report on this matter. We have provided our names and affiliations at the end of this document, in accordance with the guidelines for submittal of comments promulgated by NIST at (http://wtc.nist.gov/media/comments2008.html).
At the outset, we would like to call attention to the fact that we requested a reasonable extension of time for the public to submit comments. Given the rate at which we were finding incorrect or contradictory statements in the Report, we would likely have found many more areas NIST needs to re-examine before issuing a final report. As we pointed out in our original correspondence with you requesting the extension, the original three week deadline was completely unreasonable. First, it took NIST more than three years to compile this 1000+ page Report. Why, then,… Continue reading
